On Etsy since 2014

The brightest future........

Over the summer of 2013 I had a frustrating and fruitless search for the "perfect" lampshade. Failing to find an illumination that met my own personal taste (and exacting standards!) I decided I would make one, using fabric from my own fabric pile........and Emporium of Illumination was born!

I was working full time whilst developing Emporium of Illumination so in May 2014 I made the decision to leave the "day job" to take Emporium of Illumination forward full time. This has been the most positive life decision that I have made and the journey, so far, has been incredible.

Each of the lampshades is bespoke and made by hand, by me. I pride myself in the quality of my product and I receive feedback constantly from customers and stockists that support this. I choose to use fabric to make my lampshades from, due to its tactile nature and I am a self confessed fabric addict! I source my fabrics from across the globe and I often only buy in small quantities to ensure the unique and bespoke nature of the lampshades that I am creating. This results in limited availability of each fabric pattern. I also often save vintage fabrics from the eternal scrap pile to create one off illuminations from.

I specialise in making drum lampshades and use component parts that meet British Kite Mark safety regulations and that have been rigorously tested by the Lighting Association using the glow wire heat test. The specialist lighting component supplier that I work closely with offers a range of lampshade shapes so do get in touch if you are looking for a particular shape or size of illumination.

I love collaborating with other designer/makers and since 2015 I have worked with some incredibly talented folk. I have worked with Rachel Cave Design to develop a small exclusive fabric collection. I have also developed a small lighting range with a number or independent makers who have brought to life my lamp base designs. Relit Kernow: The Bobbin Base, Torneado & Wood: The Lucienne Lamp and Alrightmybird: The Lotta Lamp. All of these products are available within the Etsy store!

On 1st September 2017 Emporium of Illumination moved into its very first 'bricks and mortar' store in Hayle, West Cornwall. The small, but perfectly formed, space was part of a converted chapel that was wholly dedicated to small independent businesses.

On the 1st March 2020 Emporium of Illumination began a new chapter. After 2 and half happy years running a 'bricks and mortar' store I moved into a dedicated studio space in Helston, West Cornwall. Alongside my product range I showcase a small range of design-led UK designers, with a definite leaning towards fabulous homewares and sustainable product design! The Emporium of Illumination studio is open by appointment only and you will find me creating at;

6-8 Church Street, Helston, TR13 8TG

If you want to pay me a visit do get in touch, the kettle will always be on with biscuits in ready supply too!

Individual commissions are welcomed enabling you to design your lampshade to perfectly complement your home interior, using fabric that you have at home already or that you have sourced yourself. All you have to do is to get in touch for a chat about your illumination needs and Emporium of Illumination may just be able to make your illumination wishes come true!

Frequently asked questions
Do you offer refunds?

I only offer a refund or a replacement if a lampshade is damaged in transit. I do request images of the damage sustained, as sometimes a lampshade can in fact be repaired and it helps me take forward the issue with the courier company too!

Can I exchange or replace my lampshade?

As each lampshade is made to order I am unable to offer an exchange or to replace your order. However, if your illumination is damaged in transit I will, of course, offer you a refund or replacement. (Please refer to the "Do you offer refunds?" question. If a lampshade needs to be returned, for repair, the customer is responsible for the safe shipping and cost of the return.

Could I have a fabric sample for colour matching purposes?

Of course! I try to ensure that I provide good quality images of each of my lampshades so that the colour and pattern of the fabric design is accurate. However, I am more than happy to send you a small sample of the lampshade fabric, that has caught your eye, for you to try out with your colour scheme at home!
