Wood engraving is a form of relief printmaking. Areas are cut away with fine tools to leave the final image.

I start with an illustration and transfer this to the block. The wood engraving is made by cutting across the end grain of the block.

Wood engraving has a long history with illustration and would have been printed along with typeset in books before photography was used.

The traditional wood used for wood engraving is boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) which is a very hard wood. Although I also use lemon wood or modern resin blocks. The wonderful thing about using hard wood like this is the fine detail that can be made.

The blocks of wood must be seasoned for about 3 years prior to being made into blocks to engrave. The drawing process, engraving and printing can take up to 150 hours for the more complex designs.

Please note these prints come unframed.
