About

Dolls that celebrate diversity, and represent real children.

Evergreen Dolls began as a hobby after I saw a post on the Internet about a group of repainted fashion dolls and decided to have a go at making some for my young daughter to play with. One thing that bothers me about the mass-produced dolls currently on sale in shops is that they all look the same, and that's not representative of real people. We are all different, and I feel very strongly that we should be celebrating this diversity, and representing it to our children through the toys they play with. I loved creating each little character and making them all unique, and over the course of a few months I had made just over twenty dolls - far more than my daughter needed - and so I decided to open an Etsy shop. Almost a year later, it has become a thriving little business, of which I am very proud!

Although I do not currently have a specific 'custom order' listing, if you would like to enquire about ordering a doll with certain characteristics that you cannot see in my shop (e.g. Hair colour or type, eye colour, skin tone etc), please do drop me a message and I will do my best to find a suitable doll to repaint for you. Please be aware that this may take me some time, as the process of restyling and repainting these dolls is lengthy, and I may have to source a doll with a particular hair colour if I do not have one available at the time.

All the work on the dolls is done by hand, from the paintwork on the faces, to the clothes, to the new feet which I cast in hot glue from moulds I make from silicone. I also try hard to make sure as many of my materials as possible are re-used or re-cycled. Much of the fabric used in the dolls clothes has been cut from real clothes, and I make the dolls’ boxes by hand from discarded radiator packaging that my husband, a heating engineer, brings home from work! The packaging I use to post my dolls is recyclable, which is really important to me. The dolls’ clothes are all handmade by my lovely mum. We purchased knitting and sewing patterns online (from the Etsy shops of TreeChangeDolls and GraceFilledHands, respectively).

Finding time to work from home can be really tricky with a young family! But I like to be busy, and feel incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to start this little business and still look after my toddler and newborn full-time. I’m so grateful to all the people who have placed an order so far, and to everyone who has spread the word about Evergreen Dolls on social media and through word of mouth. I’ve honestly been a bit overwhelmed by the support and kind comments I’ve received, but they definitely spur me on to continue to create.

As a primary school teacher, I have always been interested in children's play and the toys that facilitate it. What I love most about creating Evergreen Dolls is making each one different, and seeing each little character develop as I paint.

My mum very cleverly makes all of the clothes worn by my dolls.
