Folklore, Form and Function
I'm a trained theatre-maker and mask artist, working at the intersection of craft, performance, and storytelling. After over a decade in London theatre, I studied physical theatre at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris — a school renowned for its pioneering work with masks, including the development of the Neutral Mask by Amleto Sartori and Lecoq himself. I trained further in mask-making with the Sartori family and Stefano Perocco di Meduna in Italy, and have performed in mask with Antonio Fava and Carlo Boso.
My practice is rooted in the European theatre tradition — particularly the embodied play and character of Commedia dell’Arte — and I explore connections between this lineage and the distinct heritage of English folk performance. I co-lead Finding Folklore, a creative project rooted in the New Forest that uncovers and enacts regional storytelling, folk culture, and community-rooted traditions from across the country.
I’m a member of The New Forest Marque Inspired and use local materials wherever possible, drawing on the history, landscape, and wildlife of the region. Each mask is handmade using both traditional and modern techniques, designed to be expressive, wearable, and built for use. Alongside masks, I also carve traditional wooden glove puppets, continuing a lineage of performance craft while developing a personal and place-based response to it.
