The M Word & Me
Hey there. My name is Louise Bowditch and I’m a spirited, coffee drinking (decaf natch), shoe-loving chatterbox with a nose for a good gin! I’m also a recovering perfectionist, a creative soul and an ex-florist who’s still obsessed with flowers.
I’ve had a creative portfolio career, changing direction when if felt right, and eventually trained as a florist, running two retail florist shops along the way as well as a photography business. Things were going well in my flowery world until I regularly found myself up all night with chronic anxiety with no obvious reason. It then began to creep its way into my daily life too. I continued to muddle my way through, often feeling emotional and very low, but it was only when I tried to ignore multiple hot flushes in the middle of an estate agents with sweat pouring down my face, did I realise that burying my head in the sand was clearly not working and I had to do something about it!
Try as I might (and believe you me, I tried), denial doesn’t work in the long run and eventually I couldn’t ignore the fact that my reproductive hormones had flung themselves over a cliff like a herd of lemmings and I was in the throes of what could only be described as a hormonal hell hole. I was a total hot mess.
There have been many times when the menopause has had me in a headlock, dangling me over the edge of the aforementioned cliff, but I’m a tenacious kinda gal, so I’ve held on and clambered back up … and am now determined to make a difference.
And so, The M Word has evolved out of a desire to help other women on their menopause journey; to help bust myths both at home and in the workplace, to break down barriers, instigate conversations and activate change. And how do I do that? Well I talk about it, speak up about it, challenge people’s attitudes about it and enlighten the unenlightened about it by giving Menopause Awareness Presentations.
And the world better bloody hurry up and get with the program, because there’s a whole load of absolutely furious menopausal women ready to rebel!
Oh yes, and before I forget, I also designed a product to help promote my feisty message. Fan Fatale is a hand-held fan that gets women noticed and challenges the status quo that menopausal women should be ashamed and embarrassed of the big M. It’s all about letting society know that we’re done with hiding, we’re ready to be seen in all our sizzling glory, and we are indeed, Hot Stuff 🔥🔥
Louise thinks it’s about time society understood the magnitude, mightiness and sometimes messiness of the menopause and is on a mission to raise awareness by breaking down barriers, instigating conversations and activating change.
