About

Glass in the loft

My studio is a converted loft room in my home in Horsham, in the county of West Sussex, England. This is where I make all my glass jewellery and glass art.

I used to be a kitchen designer, Etsy is always talking about 'quit your day job', so I did! I had a dream to have my own business, and for the last 7 years I've been selling my fused glass jewellery and glass art at fairs, markets, online and on Etsy, but it was only a couple of years ago I was reminded of my dream. It suddenly dawned on me that I had achieved my goal to work for myself!

To make the jewellery I use sheet glass and dichroic glass which gives the jewellery amazing sparkle.

To make the glass art I use sheet glass made by Bullseye Glass, as well as frit (chips of glass) in different sizes. I am intrigued by the way glass behaves when it is heated, and the colours are so vibrant. I love opening the kiln in the morning to see how my latest piece has turned out.

I discovered glass fusing when I bought an art jewellery magazine. An article described how to fuse glass with a jewellers soldering torch - not particularly successful :) I eventually bought a small kiln and never looked back. I now have a much larger kiln as well, and have been working full time since 2008, selling my glass art and jewellery at craft and gift fairs, local gift shops, Horsham market, Guildford Market and online.

I have a website https://www.firedcreations.co.uk where you will find more of my work.

Fused glass handmade in Horsham

Jewellery
I use art glass with dichroic glass. I cut the glass, assemble the pieces in layers to create a three dimentional look. I then fuse it in a programmable kiln. The glass is heated slowly to around 800C and cooled slowly to relieve the stresses that could cause it to break - this is annealling. I like to shape each piece and fire polish it (return it to the kiln to make the edges clear again. I then add the bail - ready made or my own handmade.

All jewelllery is supplied in a gift box.

Glass Art
The process of making glass art is similar to the jewellery, just on a bigger scale! A lot of the pieces start with a sheet of clear glass to which I add glass powders, granules of glass of different sizes and coloured sheet glass. Some of the items I make also include enamels which create an entirely different look.
