Announcement   Welcome to my FiredGlassStudio shop on Etsy. All glass items are handmade from my studio based in rural Suffolk in the UK. Each piece is individually made with great care and whilst I do make repeat designs because of the nature of kiln formed glass there may be a slight variation in size and colour. But that is the beauty of hand made and crafted work!

I can make quantities to order but because of the time required to make the items including firing times, please contact me for an idea of delivery time.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss colour, size and quantity variations available. Please also contact me if you would like a customised order.

About

I am glass artist based in Suffolk, UK having graduated from the University of Sunderland in 2015 with a First Class Honours in Glass and Ceramics. My hand made work is inspired by the natural landscape and maritime environment. I specialise in kiln-formed glass which includes casting, fusing and slumping glass.

Fused glass involves hand cut glass being fused together in a kiln up to 800°C. Soft metal inclusions can be “sandwiched” between sheets of glass to create patterns or features. To create a three dimensional piece a second firing is required called “slumping” which shapes the glass. Each firing takes up to 24 hours in the kiln.

Cast glass is a lengthy process using the lost wax process of mould making. Billets of glass are placed in a one off refractory mould in a kiln. The glass is fired up to 820°C and slowly cooled to prevent thermal shock. Kiln firing time depends on the thickness of the glass but generally firings vary between 24 hours to 3 days. Once cooled down, the refractory mould is broken away to reveal the cast glass piece. This is then cleaned and painstakingly hand polished which again may take up to a week to polish depending on the glass piece.

All of my work is handmade and each piece is bespokely made. As such, colour variation and size in repeat designs may slightly vary.
