Queer, Feminist, inclusive, body loving, sustainable, colour-loving fashion designer!

Hello, I’m Lois, and I love creating unusual and bold items for the home and the body.

Gaudy Grrl is a brand that loves being unusual, stared at, the brightest and weirdest in the room, and always colourful! I like to buy fabrics which have bold graphic designs on, or clashing colours, or just has something a little funky and bizarre about them. Pom Pom trims are a passion of mine and I like to incorporate them where possible (some might call it overkill, I call it tasty seasoning).

I started Gaudy Grrl in January 2018 with a 6 month old in tow, now he’s 3 and I’ve added to my clan, she’s 1 now. Kids are time consuming (who knew?) but sewing is my passion, I couldn’t be without it. The shop is a slower pace right now while they’re still small but I have big ideas for the future.

Ethical consumption is important to me, and as a business owner, I always strive to buy fabrics and hardware from reputable sources. Where possible I will reduce waste created within my workroom, and hope the longevity of my products means I am not adding to the fast-fashion lifestyle. I also take this ethos into my packaging, by using only recyclable paper and for gift items a beautiful ribbons which can be kept or re-gifted. I actually got into sewing through up-cycling old clothes and still love to incorporate this rejuvenation into my work today.

I intend to fully commit to a substantial amount of Queer and Feminist paraphernalia and aim to be as open and ‘out’ as I hope my customers can be. I am always learning, and working to being as inclusive as possible, so if you have any questions or need specific adjustments for an item to be suitable for you, please don't hesitate to email me. I want to work towards having stock suitable for ALL people and will actively ensure there are no additional charges for changes or alterations needed for certain body types. There is NO FAT TAX here! Plus-size customers pay the same as 'straight' size 8s. Same goes for fighting ableism, if you don't want your pockets at the side but prefer them on the front, or would prefer an elasticated waist instead of a zip at the back, just send me an email and we can make you the perfect garment for your body! I'm working hard to design more gender-neutral clothing so if you're into the aesthetic but would rather not don a femme presenting skirt, watch this space (for now there are non-gendered beanies for winter).

You deserve this!

As a small and new business I am still working through my policies, but over the Christmas period, I had an increase in customers requesting freebies, discounts or refunds for unwanted gifts. Hopefully since you're on Etsy you are already aware of the difficulty for independent businesses to thrive in this dog-eat-dog fast fashion throwaway culture, so please know my prices are as low and as competitive as I can afford to be, and I cannot accept returns unless there is an issue with the item's production. I am happy to consider exchanges if the item is unused but the postage will need to be covered by the customer. Please do email me if you have more questions though, I don't bite.
