Gentle Rainbow Organic Wool

Hereford, England | 580 Sales

Announcement    I sell organic wool yarn, carded fleece and handmade items made with the lovely wool from our flock of Lleyn sheep, which been farmed to certified organic standards at our place here in Herefordshire for over 20 years. We do not use any chemical products on the sheep and the wool is processed into fleece and yarn using the gentlest ingredients at an organically certified mill.
To keep the unspoilt nature of the wool I dye the wool with natural materials, mainly plants or plant-based, in small individual batches in a range of gentle, organic colours without the use of, potentially harmful, metal mordants. This means the dyed wool is kept as natural as possible. Although there are colours which cannot be produced this way there is an infinite number of subtle, gentle colour shades that can be produced and dyeing a batch is always exciting. I love working with our wool and hope you will do too.

Our Herefordshire flock of Lleyn sheep has been producing lovely organic creamy-white kemp-free wool for us here in Hereforshire for 25 years

Welcome to my Etsy shop.
I sell organic wool yarn and fleece produced by our flock of Lleyn sheep in Herefordshire, in natural white and plant-dyed, as well as a small number of handknitted or crocheted items I make with our wool.
Our flock of sheep have been here with us farmed always to organic standards for over 25 years. They are Lleyns, a breed of sheep originally from the Angelsey area in North Wales said to historically have Merino ancestors in their breeding, and they have been producing wonderful creamy-white kemp-free wool all these years. In the summer when the sheep get too hot inside their woolly coats they are sheared, but it was only a few years ago that I was finally able to send the wool to one of the few mills in the UK that processes the wool to organic standards, where using the gentlest possible ingredients, they now turn our wool into carded fleece ready for spinning, and yarn for knitting and crocheting.
I find the yarn lovely to work with and to me the wool feels healthy on my skin and to have in my home environment.
When I started selling some of my wool people liked it, but creamy-white not always being the most practical colour, beautiful and pure as it is, wondered whether I would be able to provide other colours.
I did not want to spoil the natural, organic nature of the wool by dyeing it with chemical dyes, having shunned chemicals in production so far as we do not use any on our sheep, preferring to avoid even chemical treatments allowed in organic farming. For the same reason I wondered if it would be possible to avoid using the metal mordants that are usually used with plant-dyeing to bind the colour to the wool or change the intensity of the colour.
I decided to start experimenting dyeing the wool with plants and plant extracts, as well as cochineal, a natural but not plant-based dye, to find out whether I would be able to produce a range of coloured wool using only these ingredients.
Gentle Rainbow Organic Wool is the result. I have found that I can produce a range of gentle, subtle, natural colours using these methods.
When I trained as an art and craft teacher many years ago I experimented with spinning, weaving and dyeing wool, an interest that has finally, after a long gap of many years, resulted in my own home-based wool business.

Welcome to my Etsy shop.
I sell organic wool yarn and fleece made with the wool from our flock of Lleyn sheep in Herefordshire, as well as a small number of handknitted or crocheted items made with our wool. These are knitted and crocheted by myself in my home which is pet and smoke-free.

To keep it as natural and organic as possible I dye the yarn and carded fleece with natural materials, mainly plants and plant-based. To maintain the natural and organic status of the wool as much as possible I dye it without the use of the, potentially harmful, metal mordants.

The wool is dyed in small batches. As with most dyed materials only the colours of skeins dyed in the same batch can be guaranteed to be an exactly identical shade, but I can dye a larger batch to order. If you order a small number or only 1 skein of one colour but would like to know whether more are available from the same batch should you need them please contact me to check and I can put some temporarily aside for you.

The wool is also available undyed in natural creamy white, to use as it is, or for you to dye at home.

The wool is medium soft with lots of bounce.

Our wool is gentle to the environment and gentle to wear.

Returns and exchange details
UPDATE TO RETURNS POLICY from 17/03/2020. I am very sorry but in the present circumstances and for the time being because of the Covid-19 situation I cannot accept returns or exchanges.
POSSIBLE DELAYS DUE TO COVID-19 virus situation: Please be aware that some postage and delivery services are experiencing delays. Although most orders are arriving promptly as usual some may now be delayed especially going further afield outside Europe.

I hope you will be very happy with your purchase.
I check my orders very carefully and do my best to ensure you get exactly what you would like, providing as much information as you would like before posting it, so hopefully there should not be any problems with the order but if in spite of that you are not happy with your order please let me know so I can try and sort the problem.

I do accept cancellations, unless I dyed a a special order specifically for you, but you would need to cancel very promptly, because once the order has been posted I cannot recall it. An order that has been posted cannot be cancelled.

Although in the years I have been selling my wool noone has wanted to return an order, I felt I needed to make you aware that I felt it was sensible to remove the option to do so for the time being, and the usual returns policy has been suspended for as long as the Covid-19 situation lasts.
Payment
All payment methods now accepted.

All sales are subject to UK & EU law.
Delivery
Although allowing up to 2 working days to send the order out orders will often be posted next working day after the order was placed.

I am sorry I cannot offer free postage - to do so would increase the prices on the wool a lot and I prefer to show the price of the wool separate to the price of the postage. Sadly UK Royal Mail has seen a lot of price increases in the past few years since they became a private company and the cost of postage does now add a lot more to the cost of your order than it used to due to this. The postage charges I charge reflect what the cost is to me of posting your order but is often less than that.

Your order will be sent by post using the UK Royal Mail:
UK orders are sent via Royal Mail 2nd class post - unless you choose the upgrade to the next day by 1pm signed for delivery which is now available in the shop, but is much more expensive.

Orders going abroad will be sent standard post, airmail, which takes up to 5 working days for Europe and USA, but may take longer to other destinations - unless you choose the upgrade to International tracked & signed for which is now available in the shop, but is much more expensive.

If you are ordering a larger number of items and would like an individual quote for postage please contact me, I will find the cheapest way to send the order for you.

I will always get a proof of postage when posting your item but to keep the carriage cost down do not send orders with a to-be-signed for service, unless you have chosen and paid for the option to do this.

The UK postal system is generally very reliable. I have not had any problems with orders sent elsewhere, but if your order is leaving the UK and you are aware that your country's postal system may not be that reliable you may prefer a tracked and signed-for delivery in spite of the added expense as this tracks the delivery and the parcel can be traced en route as well as found if one should ever go astray.

When ordering from outside the UK, please note that I cannot be responsible for any custom charges if there are any and I cannot accept responsibility for delays due to customs of your postal services.
Additional policies and FAQs
Colours in sunshine and water details:
All dyed textiles even when dyed with chemical dyes will be prone to fading to some extent with time if in direct sunlight and some, but definitely not all, of my colours are sensitive to strong, direct sunlight which after time can cause some fading, generally not a problem with items to wear, but something to bear in mind if deciding to use it for pictures or similar items for continuous display.

Generally the wool washes well, and the colours wash well too. Some of the medium and dark greens can shed some colour but other colours are generally not likely to do so.

Data protection details:
As all your orders on Etsy come to me through Etsy and Etsy takes all payments I never see or hold any payment details related to your order. Etsy takes all payments, charges a fee and passes the remainder of any payments on to me from their account.

Etsy does pass to me as part of your order, in the form of an order receipt/invoice generated by Etsy when you place your order, the details of what you have ordered, the name and address that you have provided them with where the order is to be sent, the amounts, in figures, that have been paid for the items in the order and for the postage, and any other notes or instructions that you have provided when you placed the order.
The information above is used by myself only, to receive and process your order and to enable me to post it to the correct delivery address.

I engage certain trusted third parties to perform functions and provide services to my shop, in my case solely the UK Post Offices and Royal Mail, which is our national postage service, to post orders. I will share your personal information (restricted to the delivery name and address, and that the parcel contains wool and the weight of the parcel) with these third parties, but only to the extent necessary to perform these services.

For UK tax purposes I have to keep a copy of the order receipt for 5 years, in paper or digital form, in case these are required if the UK tax offices wish to check my accounts, or they are needed for other legal requirements. After this time these will be destroyed. At present I keep paper copies as the more reliable format and also more easily destroyed at the end of this period (by burning).
These are kept in my work room at my residence and only accessed by myself.

I can also access your order and the delivery and contact details you provided in digital format on the Etsy website in my shop. I am relying on Etsy to ensure their website and shop protections are robust and that they will keep the digital details you provide them with protected and only accessible as appropriate to enable processing of your order.
