The journey so far...

It has been a long-standing ambition of mine to create beautiful jewellery, and maybe make an income from it one day.

The journey has been long, and I have learned a lot about myself from the knocks and scrapes that life gives you, and I feel that I am ready to take the risk and start to pursue that ambition. I have raised my children, and now I have a little more time on my hands and the freedom to try new things.

Like us all, I have lost some family and friends along the way. Some through illness and some through their own choice, and each has served as a stark and shocking reminder that we only live once, and that we should make the very most of every opportunity.

I have been a teacher for many years, specialising in GCSE and A level Physics and Chemistry. It is the best job in the world, and it is an absolute honour and privilige to be a constant in the lives of young people, and to bear witness them learning and growing into young adults.

However, I have realised that the retirement age keeps going up, and nobody can manage a classroom full of teenagers when they're in their late 50s never mind 60s or 70s! I have a fantasy that I might be revered and respected like a female Professor Dumbledore, but we all know that itsn't going to happen! So now it is time to activate Plan B.

Right from being a young child I was fascinated by the metallic elements and all their strange and magical properties, so it seems a natural step for me to gravitate towards working with elemental silver.

I recently went on the "Introduction to Silversmithing" course run my Central Saint Martin's (UAL) in London and was absolutely blown away by the whole process. To be completely immersed in the intricate detail of creating something beautiful was a real treat. Learning in an environment with access to world class tutors and facilities was incredible, and I didn't waste a single second of it!

Fuelled by this, I launched a KickStarter project in order to raise funds to buy all the tools I needed, and it was successful. My first job was to make 26 simple silver rings to send out all over the world to my generous backers. Here's the link to it http://kck.st/2Xop8X9

In order to learn the basics of running a small business I have taken GCSE Business Studies by studying at home, and have just finished sitting the exams, in an exam hall alongside students that I teach science to! They were amused but I'd like to think they were also a little bit impressed that "Miss" would inflict that upon herself. Life is for learning, kids! :D Results day is 22nd August 2019...

The modern world is full of decisions, and I have taken the decision to work only with Fairmined or Ecosilver (recycled from the jewellery, giftware, medical and electronic industries). It is all 100% recycled, traceable and audited, and although it costs a little more than ordinary 925 sterling silver, it is worth it for peace of mind.

I am also a part time civil celebrant, writing and delivering really unique and special family ceremonies. These might be weddings (any gender or orientation), renewal of vows, baby namings or simple handfastings. I am a full time science teacher and a part time silversmith, based in the beautiful Ribble Valley. At the moment all my creating is done in the kitchen, whether it is food or silver jewellery.
