About

Printing in our Kitchen

Grey Letter Press is run by husband and wife team, Sam and Sam, with occasional “assistance” from our cats, Basil and Saffron. We are based in Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire, though we’re dreaming of a move to Norfolk, a quieter life and a bigger workshop.

We both have professional backgrounds in the publishing and printing industries, but have fallen head-over-heels with the tactile art of letterpress printing; the simple pleasure of putting ink to paper. Well, it’s not simple at all in many cases, working with antique presses and type comes with an interesting set of challenges!

It’s wonderful to see the resurgence in popularity of letterpress in recent years. It seems we’re not alone in becoming less enamoured with mass produced and impersonal stationery.

Our mission is to create original, contemporary and beautiful letterpress items; and to spread the word on this historic craft ensuring its survival long into the future.

All of our work is printed by hand, on FSC certified paper, using water-washable inks, meaning no yucky solvents needed!

We use a 1940s Stephenson Blake proof press for most of our letterpress work. Using a proof press means that each individual impression has to be inked by hand using a roller before printing. So our prints really are lovingly (and laboriously!) handmade.
