About

Design, Printmaking Letterpress and linoblock love

I use traditional Printmaking skills with a graphic designer head to make completely unique cards, art prints, homeware, textiles and gifts.

A bit more about me - I'm an artist, printmaker, and graphic designer. Drawing makes me happy and am completely obsessed by all things print (potato and fingerprints included plus letterpress) and typography.

Im lucky enough to now live and work in New Brighton, which is a vibrant seaside town on the north east coast of the Wirral, close to Liverpool, Chester and North Wales. On a good day I can see Blackpool tower in the distance from my studio window. I love the local scenery of the North West as well my past homelands of Yorkshire, Northumberland and Newcastle.

A bit more about printmaking-Linoprinting is a traditional relief printing method based on hand carving a design from linoleum or 'Lino' block - similar to the stuff we use for floors but using artists linoleum- and using a range of specialised tools (called gouges -ouch!) and forming prints - usually on paper - with relief ink.

There are a couple of special techniques- I use both a 'reduction' or 'multiple block' process. Each print is handprinted and live that each is different depending on the pressure applied to the paper.

Letterpress involves setting of very old lead (the soft metal) or wood block letters within a printing chase ( part of the printing press) and carefully then fixing each letter in place. Some of these like 8 pt size are tiny so I use tweezers to pick them up. When printed off because the ink is pressed into the paper it gives a gorgeous feel and each impression has its own unique ink texture.

I love that some of the wood letters are about 100 years old. There are tiny knocks and scratches which come through in the print. Plus it's fascinating to think what kind of books, newspapers and posters they might have been used for in their lifetime.

I used water and oil based inks , depending on the coverage an effect I need. I mix all my own ink colours from basic primary colours. Generally red, yellow, blue with black and white. Sometimes this takes a verrrrry long time just to get the colours to match those I have in my head.

My original designs and prints use both techniques often together to produce small limited edition runs as well as unique one off commissions and personalised pieces of work.

    Owner, Designer

I'm an artist and printmaker, designer, and mum inspired by the little gems around us everyday. I love all things old, and enjoy imagining the stories they could tell. I seriously hate coat hangers and cold feet.
