About

Combining patchwork, paint and modern calligraphy to create colourful, fun, unique pieces for the modern home.

Handmade by Holchester is a one-mum band of me (Rachel), supported by my hubby Jon and our daughter Thea. The name comes from the combination of Holt, my mother’s maiden name, and Winchester, my married name. Having been brought up in a creative household using Holt is acknowledging both how inspired I am by my Mam who took a career break to retrain as a metalwork restorer and silversmith and also how grateful I am for the encouragement and support of my parents, over many years, in getting to do something I really adore.

Setting-up up Handmade by Holchester really has been a dream made reality for me. Having always been an amateur dressmaker and experimented with fabric for things for my own home and as gifts, the opportunity to turn it into a business didn't arise until Thea had arrived and it was just too good to miss. I've always played around with colour and fabric, sketching, sewing and seeing where it all goes. This love of colour and decoration, and wanting to share how fabulous it can be saw me do a degree in Art History and then in Art Gallery and Museum Studies. When that couldn't pay the rent I transferred my skills to HR for a few years but, to use a cliché, I was called to create and I never strayed far from my sewing machine.

Handmade by Holchester stands for 3 things – fun, lovingly (hand)made and unique. I love colour, decorative fabrics and hand lettering and with each design I spend time making sure these elements balance out so they’re fun but also stylish and fit in a modern home. Each piece I make is one of a kind with all stencils hand-drawn, hand-cut and then hand-painted. Not only that, but all the patchwork details are remnant fabrics from other projects (and other people’s projects) that would otherwise have gone to waste. That means all fabric combinations, especially those on the details, are exclusive to that item. The patchwork and paint combination is my signature style which gives me the freedom to create fun, colourful and unique handmade pieces for my clients all at the high standard that you expect, and deserve.

It all starts with a pencil and a sketchbook in my little home sewing room where the sewing machine shares its space with the cutting mat, the ironing board, the laptop and a lot of other sewing, paper cutting and general paraphernalia. Surrounded by notebooks, pictures, my Go Ape certificate (I was petrified!) and a super-sparkly bow-tie, this is not only my one kiddy-free space in the house but is also my inspirational little hideaway. It really is such a pleasure to be in here but especially when I have the privilege to sketch, paint and sew the pieces that will bring such smiles and happiness to people.

I didn't start Handmade by Holchester to achieve world domination, as lovely as a multi-coloured patchwork world could be. I started it because making things that made my friends so happy made me so happy. Receiving a gift, perhaps personalised, bought just with you in mind gives the recipient the warm glowy feeling that you only get when you realise just how special that person thinks you are. This is my chance to help create that for other people too!
