6th July
~~ US Postage 1st July increases ~~
We are shocked to see that the current increases in general 10% international postal rates have particularly hit the US -
https://www.royalmail.com/prices2020
They have gone up by 25%-50% and we are so sorry about this - it is beyond our control. As always, we do not profit on shipping and now, we are subsidizing it in order to honour existing orders. We always pass on refunds once we have receipts back. WE do not use economy shipping as it takes 6-8 weeks and there are lost items. Here is a link that explains our charges:

1st July 2020 THE MUNESS SHAWL

IMPORTANT ! 1 June 2020 TRACKING and DELAYS
As other small businesses are finding - all postal services are being very disrupted due to Covid, and it is customarily now taking about 6 weeks for some International orders to arrive (around 20%). We are most sorry about this as it is beyond our control. Internal UK orders are tracked as a free service but unless requested, overseas are not as it is an unnecessary expense - it doesn't make them any quicker and generally only 2% actually get lost. Please, if you are not UK and require tracking: request this at time of order in the Order Notes. We will then contact you about how to cover the extra costs - usually around £4-8 more. Please see next entry which explains our Covid policy. Stay Safe!

17th March 2020
In these worrying times we'd like to say first we wish you and yours well - and to reassure you we have your health interests at heart. To that end we continue to be scrupulous in our cleaning and packaging and now we have adopted a policy of social distancing. We will therefore send packed parcels out towards the end of each week.

Here, to keep safe, we are adopting advice that says do not immediately unpack ANY parcel - let it sit and wait for you for a few days - OR wipe it appropriately outside first as you cannot be sure what it may have picked up in transit.

After that, yes - knitting is enormously therapeutic we find, and we trust this awful period will pass soon. Till then,
Love
Sharon and Sue

I've had to update our terms and conditions to encourage safe usage - please check you agree these before ordering:

THE LEGALS

(I'm sorry about these but for us to continue to have insurance this sort of thing seems now essential. ) The following are about your basic duties as a customer to act responsibly and with due care with the supplied products and information, especially with safety in mind at all times.

IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THESE IN THEIR ENTIRETY YOU HAVE THE RIGHT NOW (date of order) TO INFORM US WITHIN 24 HOURS OF THIS - THE ETSY SALES RECEIPT CONTAINING THIS INFORMATION - AND WE WILL CANCEL THE TRANSACTION AND REFUND ANY MONIES. IF WE DO NOT HEAR FROM YOU AT THE END OF THE 24 HOUR PERIOD WE SHALL PROCEED WITH THE TRANSACTION AS WE WILL ACCEPT THAT YOU AGREED TO COMPLY WITHOUT RESERVATION WITH THE FOLLOWING FOUR (4) CONDITIONS:

1. SAFETY AND USE
It is an essential term of sale that you accept this and the following Limitations of Liability and Indemnification and recognize we would not provide the services or the products to you if you did not accept and honour the following. Inform us NOW within 24 hours if you do not agree and we will refund your money and cancel the transaction.

Sharon Miller trading as 'Heirloom Knitting' has made every effort to ensure that all instructions given in her patterns, pdfs and books together with all the items for sale are accurately described, fit for purpose and safe, and cannot accept liability for any resulting injury, damage or loss to the person or property whether direct or consequential and howsoever arising. The use of products bought or supplied from Heirloom Knitting (books, information, knitting yarn, knitting needles, scissors, sewing needles, pins and any other sewing paraphernalia) is only to be undertaken by responsible adults who IN TURN accept the duty to keep such items away from situations and/or vulnerable persons including children, or animals, where these items could be the cause of any harm or damage - see Limitations of Liability. It is therefore a condition of every sale and of every use that the buyer or IN TURN the end-user craftsperson recognises and accepts the full legal liability for the watchful safeguarding of themselves and others when following directions or using the purchased items.

2. LIMITED WARRANTIES
The information and services, content, materials, products and goods are provided "as is" and "as available" and to the fullest extent allowable under the applicable law we and our suppliers disclaim all warranties, expressed or implied, including - but not limited to, any warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, non-interference, system integration and data accuracy.
If an applicable law requires a warranty for a product or service, all such are limited in duration to NINETY (90) days from date of this, the Etsy-issued Customer Receipt to allow for delivery time to customer.
We do not have access to the financial information you provided to make your payment. We will safeguard and treat as confidential any necessary supplied private information (your name, address, products bought) that you provided and promise never to share such information without your express permission beforehand. However, we cannot indemnify against a future or potential malicious cyber attack so you must assume the security risk for any information you provided in order for us to supply you with the ordered goods and services.

Limitations of Liability
The use of the supplied services and products are at your own risk. The products are NOT intended for use by children or vulnerable adults. You as the purchaser have a duty to use them and to ensure that they are used with due and responsible adult regard to safety and the potential for the items to be (i) the unintentional cause of accidental injury or damage or (ii) misused to cause such injury or damage.
It is the essential condition of sale that you accept the unreserved undertaking to keep any supplied goods away from vulnerable persons, children or animals, or situations where the items could be the cause (intended or accidental) of any harm, injury or damage. In no event will we or our suppliers be liable for any such injury or damage whether indirect, incidental, consequential or other in connection with the supplied goods, the supplied services or these terms whether or not such injury or damage was likely or foreseeable.

In no event will the aggregate liability to you for any and all claims arising in connection with these terms, the products and services exceed either (i) $250, OR (ii) the total value of orders placed in the last NINETY (90) days - whichever is the greater.

Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, hold harmless and, at our option, defend Sharon Miller trading as 'Heirloom Knitting' from and against all damages, claims, demands, liabilities, costs and expenses, including reasonable Attorneys' Fees resulting from any violation by you of these terms or applicable law.

3. EMAILS AND ELECTRONIC FILES
Pattern pdfs will be personally emailed directly to the buyer from our email address to theirs. They are not to be distributed without permission from Sharon Miller. An email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the individual to whom they are addressed. If you have received them in error, you should not disseminate or copy the email. Please notify Sharon Miller immediately and delete it from your system.
The sale of pattern pdfs by us is NOT an automated Download Service for Digital Items - we do it this way to ensure costs for our customers are kept as low as feasible - as VAT does not then need to be applied. This, in broad terms (after logged advice from HMRC Customs and Revenue, 29th February 2016) is currently an extra 20-25% in Europe depending on the home country of the customer.

We can not warrant that your use of our service will be uninterrupted or error-free or malware-free or virus-free. You will be solely responsible for any damage to your computer equipment or data loss that may result. Regardless of this or any sale, you are advised to make and maintain frequent back-up copies of your user content. Email transmission cannot be guaranteed to be secure, or error free as information could be intercepted, corrupted, lost, destroyed, late in arriving or incomplete as a result of the transmission process. Sharon Miller therefore does not accept liability for any errors or omissions in the contents of messages which arise as a result of email transmission.
Finally, you agree to check emails and any attachments for viruses. Sharon Miller (trading as Heirloom Knitting) can accept no liability for any damage caused by any virus, etc., transmitted by email. It is recommended that you actively protect all your confidential and personal information, including that sent by email, and suggest that you consider the advice on the getsafeonline website (getsafeonline.org).

4. IMPORTANT
It is an essential condition of sale that you read and accept this and the above Conditions and the Indemnification and recognise we SHALL NOT THEN provide the services or the products to you if you do not agree to accept and honour them in full.

OLDER NEWS
September Tip: To convert NM to yd/oz
Find the yarn's single NM - so a Merino Lace 2/28NM (is actually a 2 ply using 28000m of a 1 ply per kilo), = 14000m per 2 plied thread...now, multiply this single= 1/14nm 'x 31' and you get the 'yd/oz' approx....eg 1/14NM x 31 = 436 yd/oz.

It works in reverse too:
a 160 yd/oz yarn 'divided by 31' = 1/5.16NM = 5160m/kg.
If it's a 2 ply the spin number, will be 2/5.3NM

So '31' is a knitter's friend, now just link it to something memorable....for me, easy - the age I was when I had my son!

Signed copies of the revised and extended full colour edition of Heiroom Knitting are available from here and all books bought from me will have a free signed bookmark with ten hand-wound samples of the majority of the yarns featured!
https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/271124642/heirloom-knitting-revised-enlarged-full

As you may have picked up, I've been deep in research now on old wool yarns both US and UK as they are sister yarns - so to understand one is to understand the other - and the vintage yarns of the US have better survived the 'make do and mend' campaigns of WW2, so studying them provides enormous insight into the now lost UK ones ~ only the stuff of vintage patterns for most part.

More HK is being beavered away on slowly too and whatever takes my knitting brain's fancy! I hope all is well with you and yours :-)

"Here is where you will find everything for finest Shetland Lace Knitting. This is a specialist shop, please be patient to allow me to give your order the time it deserves and for me to write further books. Sometimes, I need to specially order in items, and it can take a day or two longer than the scheduled dispatch day.

PLEASE NOTE - ALL MY WORK IS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ONLY -
PATTERNS CANNOT BE DELIVERED IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE.
Posting days are normally Tuesday and Friday.

THE LEGALS - 4 Important Conditions of Every Sale

THE LEGALS
I'm sorry about these but for us to continue to have insurance this sort of thing seems now essential. The following are about your basic duty as a customer to act responsibly and with due care with the supplied products and information, especially with safety in mind at all times.

It is an essential term of sale that you accept this and the following Limitations of Liability and Indemnification and recognise we would not provide the services or the products to you if you did not accept and honour the following.

4. PLEASE ALWAYS USE ETSY 'CONVO' if contacting us regarding a problem with an order to ensure etsy are always copied in. This is requested so that any potential weird settings on personal email inboxes don't cause extra frustrations AND doing this will leave us all with a neat paper trail to follow to best and swiftest resolution!
All of our items are carefully inspected, checked, packed and sent but very occasionally, disappointment may occur. Should any aspect of a transaction fall below our high standards, or fail to meet your expectations, we would like to hear from you as outlined next so that we may improve our service:
??? OH NO!!! Any concerns :-) ???? ---What to do ??
We would kindly ask you to provide us with an opportunity to put right any mistakes before leaving feedback on etsy.

Many thanks and kindest regards

Sharon & Sue
