Hook&I : Handmade crochet homeware and gifts aiming to be as eco-friendly as possible!

HELLO & WELCOME! I'm Zoe/Zo/ZoZo the creator and owner of Hook&I :) Here's a little snapshot into the my life and the business.

I am a Yorkshirewoman currently living in Bristol, UK. I live with my partner John and our four legged monster #girthewonderdog whom I both met whilst living and working in Melbourne, Australia. After finishing my 4 year Marketing Management Degree at Northumbria University in Newcastle, I decided it was time for me to see a little bit more of the world so I applied for my Australian working holiday visa and booked my one way flight. I can easily say this was the best decision I have ever made. After living in Sydney for a few months, completing my farm work (I milked cows for 3 months) and then travelling up the East Coast of Australia I then started my next chapter in Melbourne. This is a spectacular city which I have so much love for and this is where the Hook&I journey actually started.

It was September 2016 and was living in beautiful Melbourne. I have some yarn left over from a craft project and don't know what to do with it. Seeking inspiration from a good friend of mine called Amy I decide to follow in her footsteps and give crocheting a go. I headed out to get myself my very first crochet hook, and I start watching You Tube videos for crochet beginners. I'm not going to lie, my first few attempts were pretty ghastly and I was almost ready to give up. However over this period I started to watch a lot of Bella Coco videos and this is how I fell in love with crocheting. I then started to make crochet greeting cards for friends and family for birthdays and Christmas and trying out new patterns where I wasn't working. After receiving a lot of positive feedback and support I decided that people actually liked what I was making and I could sell my wares to others as well. This is where the idea of opening an Etsy shop came from. The first name I actually came up with was Hook&I (Hook being the tool that I use to crochet, and I; being the maker of the crochet products- I think it's quite self explanatory really). These plans and ideas had to be placed on hold though as I was due to return to the UK in the spring of 2017.

After returning to the UK I decided to make my idea a reality, and in March 2018 after getting settled in Bristol, the HookAndICraftsStore Etsy shop (or Hook&I for short) opened. My first listing was he ever popular crochet cactus that you can still buy in the shop today. I have made a few tweeks to them though by upgrading to a natural and sustainable material instead of acrylic. Our product range now included a variety of homeware essentials, crochet jewellery, greeting cards, crochet tools, and seasonal gifts.

A value that I feel strongly about is reducing waste and using sustainable materials where possible. I have passed this value onto Hook&I and, the products and packaging created are made from as many recycled or biodegradable materials and fibres as possible to try and save the Earth's natural resources. I use a variety of different materials from jute which is 100% biodegradable to yarns made from 100% recycled cotton fibres. Our overall aim is for as many of our products and packaging to be as eco-friendly as possible!

I hope you will follow my journey with me.

Frequently asked questions
How long will my Overseas order take to reach me?

All orders from Hook&I are shipped from Bristol in the UK.

Overseas Service: Royal Mail International Standard

How long? The Royal Mail plan on this taking 5-7 working days to reach your country

--Then--
It is passed onto the countries postal service to continue the journey to your shipping address.

*It is important to know that international shipping can be slowed down by customs so it can take up to 28 days*

How long will my UK order take to reach me?

All UK orders are sent out 2nd Class unless the 1st class upgrade is selected. This means you should receive your purchase within 2-3 working days of it being shipped. If 1st class is selected you should receive this within 1-2 working days of it being shipped.

Do Hook&I include packing slips in their orders?

An environmental policy of Hook&I is to minimise as much natural resource waste as possible. Due to this I decided from the very beginning not to include packing slips in purchases. All purchase information can be found via the Etsy purchase confirmation or through your Etsy account where you as a customer can print this out. If a packing slip in required I would be more than happy to provide you with one, you would just have to leave me a note when you are at check out.

What is Jersey Yarn?

Jersey yarn is made from 100% recycled factory off-cuts from Turkey. The Jersey Yarn that I use at Hook&I is Wool and the Gang - Jersey Be Good.

What is Jute?

Jute is a natural vegetable fibre that can be spun into a strong thread. Some advantages of this fibre is the production requires little to no use of pesticide, it's 100% biodegradable and it's very durable & strong.
