Up until the age of 3, I wanted to be a nurse but from then onwards I just wanted to paint and draw. In my practice I am always exploring the tales we tell, to ourselves and to each other, those stories embedded deep within our culture that reveal so much about what it is to be human. My aim is to make art where object and meaning, substance and symbol, unite. I am intrigued by female icons, from the ancients such as Eve and Pandora, to more contemporary characters. I use these women's stories to shine a light on modern perceptions and assumptions about the female sex.

I trained in Fine Art, BA Hons. First Class at The University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne followed by Postgraduate Diploma in Painting at The Royal Academy Schools, London. I am currently a Stirling Maxwell Fellow for Text & Image Cultures, University of Glasgow and Associate Art Adviser to the Partnership for School Improvement.
