About

From one thing to another

Woodturning is the most fascinating and challenging task I have so far encountered in this life. The joy of woodturning is a pleasure to be experienced. There is always the challenge, and resultant satisfaction, of doing something you have never done before, and we never master everything that is possible. Occasionally there is even more satisfaction when you do something that no body else has ever done before. After doing many different things I ended up as a restorer of metal antiques.
During this “antiques phase” one of my customers, a very good friend, asked if I could make a set of bone cribbage pegs for a very nice crib board he had. I have long believed that if you do not know you cannot do something, then you probably can, and we never know if we have not tried, so I said yes to his request. There is not a very large demand for crib pegs, though I have since made hundreds, but it occurred to me that such objects would make very attractive ear rings. I duly made a set which I gave to the wife of a friend, who was a wood restorer. She was extremely pleased but remarked how good they would look in wood. My friend gave me a few small bits of wood, Yew and South American tulipwood amongst them, for me to try. That was the beginning of my love affair with wood, which was easier to turn than bone and much more varied in its colours. From here my path took me to chess repairs and then thread chasing, especially puzzles, which became the thing for which I am now best known. Most of my knowledge has come from the writings, and friendship of Bill Jones.
Always remember - if you do not know you cannot do it, then you probably can.
