Oh I love this even more than I thought. Seeing it in person, the vase really shows through it's beauty. I love the size and shape. At the top the sgraffito is carved out to these attractive points. It adds so much interest to the piece. And the blue fern sgraffito itself is so pretty. Jen Smith does not disappoint! Her work is beautiful while at the same time fun!

About

Small-batch, Illustrated Ceramics Handcrafted in Glasgow

Welcome to Jen Smith Ceramics!

I am an independent ceramicist making small-batch, illustrated pottery from my Glasgow based studio. I use several techniques to create ceramics and pottery which I then use as a canvas for my original illustrations. All of the illustrations are etched into the clay surface and are drawn freehand, making each pot completely unique and a work in it’s own right. I am drawn to botanical subjects and enjoy the organic, natural marks left on the pottery surface when making by hand. Pottery is a slow and patient craft and my decision to specialise in this time consuming process is a conscious step away from mass-produced, disposable home ware in the hope that by making something well, with time and skill, it will be enjoyed and loved for many years.

Most of my surface design is informed by scientific botanical drawings of spectific plants and I try to combine plant species based on a shared habitat. I like the contrast of the warm, organic feel of the form, where dimples and brush marks left by the hand building process are still visible, against the intricate, colourful line drawings within my work.

My work celebrates the fact that everyday objects and routines are made more enjoyable by drinking out of a favourite cup or serving friends food in beautiful bowls that have been made with care and craftsmanship.

Pottery is a slow process and I love the way it's pace is dictated by the materials and the firings needed to make each finished object. It makes you consider each step, have patience in your work and it means no two pieces are exactly the same.

I really enjoy working on commissions and one-of-a-kind ceramics so if you have an idea please get in touch.

Hello and welcome!

I am an independent ceramicist making small-batch, illustrated pottery from my Glasgow based studio. I use several techniques to create ceramic home wares which I then use as a canvas for my original illustrations which are drawn freehand, making each pot completely unique and a work in it’s own right.

I am drawn to botanical subjects, informed by scientific drawing where each design is of a particlar plant species. In my ceramic forms I use handbuilding to achieve the organic, natural marks left on the pottery surface when making by hand. Pottery is a slow and patient craft and my decision to specialise in this time consuming process is a conscious step away from mass-produced, disposable home ware in the hope that by making something well, with time and skill, it will be enjoyed and loved for many years.

Each piece of functional pottery is handcrafted in my Glasgow studio. Everything I make is food safe, I never use lead glazes. As with all handmade pottery and ceramics it is recommended that you wash items by hand.

Returns and exchanges
If an item reaches you in a damaged condition, I will gladly exchange it for a replacement with a similar item of equal value, or give you a refund. Please notify me within 3 business days of receipt if you receive a damaged item and ship it back to the studio. Buyer is responsible for the cost of shipping back to the studio. The new item will be posted once the damaged item is received.

As items are one of a kind, ordering an exact replacement isn't possible, but I can remake an item with as close to the original design as possible. This might take up to six weeks to produce, plus shipping time.

Sale items and custom orders are non-refundable.

All efforts are made to accurately show and describe each piece. However, if you are unhappy with your purchase and your item is not as you expected, please contact me right away and I will do my best to fix the situation. If you are still unhappy, you may return the unused, undamaged item within 7 days of receipt, and I will refund the purchase price. I will not be able to refund shipping costs.

If you are returning an item, please repack your item carefully for shipping. I strongly advise purchasing insurance and tracking. If a previously undamaged item arrives back damaged due to insufficient packaging or if a package is lost, a refund will not be given.
Payment
I accept payment with all major credit cards via Direct Checkout and through PayPal.
Shipping
Ceramic items are carefully wrapped and packaged and highly unlikely to break in transit.

I always leave three days from payment before shipping for the buyer to change their mind, after which orders will be sent and cannot be cancelled. I try to keep the costs of packing and shipping to a minimum and pass the savings to my customers, often re-cycling boxes and materials to be as green as possible.

If you would like to upgrade to tracked shipping, I'll be happy to calculate the additional cost to do so, just send me a message before you place your order and let me know which item you would like and I will let you know the additional cost so you can decide before you order.
