Distictive different jewellery

Contemporising traditional skills and materials to make jewellery that will not go unnoticed.

I seek to embody an elegant yet playful artistic vibe.

The ideas behind the jewellery are greatly influenced by my background and ethnic origin – as well as finding a new home. I am originally from Kenya.

I trained as a product designer in Nairobi, Kenya. As a product designer I worked with various groups and organizations in East Africa to conceptualise entrepreneurial ideas and improve skills both in crafts and management.

Working form my workshop and enrolling in Bath College has enlivened my interest in personally making my own range. I have great relationships with other designers, artists and makers in Frome and Bath. Together with the college I am happy to exist in truly vibrant artists circles.

The name ‘Kipenzi’ is a Swahili word, which means ‘favourite’ or ‘small loved object’. I aspire to make products that become favourites.

My images are as the products are – some are taken in daylight whilst others are lit. Editing is seldom needed.

Materials and tools:

Other than metals, I use recycled glass, bone and horn in my work. All these are recycled or up-cycled and mostly made by groups in Kenya whose enterprises I helped set up and now run profitably.

As with many handmade products, maintaining an industrial like quality is impossible. There can be slight variations on the metal and other materials, which only adds to the unique aspect of the pieces. I try to be as true to the picture as I can.

Care of the products is specific to the item. Harsh chemicals and excessively moist conditions should be avoided.

Most jewellery is easily cleaned with a mild detergent and soft cloth or brush.
