About

A passion for producing unique, organic inspired, porcelain vessels and accessories

Hand-made, decorative porcelain vessels and accessories

Smooth, tactile and translucent are the qualities that have drawn me to porcelain, as well as the ability to create precise, intricate patterns and details. I have loved handling clay since my school Art A-level days, and attended many evening classes over the years. Following a career break after having children I started to follow some creative pursuits and, under the guidance of a renowned ceramic artist, Sue Dyer, at The Midlands Art Centre, I have developed a true passion for porcelain.

Moulds which I have made myself from found or existing objects often provide the starting point for a 'slip-cast' design. I often alter the shape by carving a new or unexpected line into the top of the vessel and then add decoration - whether this is with texture, a fun motif or by carving various sized holes. I love the purity and simplicity of white porcelain so occasionally I leave pieces un-glazed. Where glazes are used I tend to have a limited palette of blues, greens and creams.

Much of my work has an organic feel as I draw inspiration from patterns in nature, as found in water droplets, the detail from a sea-urchin or even microscopic organisms. In creating pieces for 'Made at Mac' exhibition, my work has increasingly being influenced by the sea and the sea-side - what washes up on the shore; distressed rock formations; shells; a string of pearls; the crest of a wave to name but a few.

I prefer to stick to the ethos behind 'hand-made' so that every new vessel is its own piece of art, with a slightly different colour-way or design. Sometimes the shapes distort slightly, which is a beautiful and unique part of the hand-made process.

I have used a variety of pictures to try and give you a full view of my work, however, small marks or blemishes may occur due to the natural processes in producing the work. These to me represent the difference from factory produced work and are often the beauty in a handmade item.

I am happy to discuss commission pieces, but please be aware than the process is approx 4-6 weeks.
