Cabinet of Curiosities & Oddities - 'Art of Kuriology'

Helston, England 6 Sales On Etsy since 2017

Announcement   Thank you for visiting 'KuriousThings' - 'The Art of Kuriology'

During 2018, Etsy was not quite really working for me. I was doing seriously belting sales elsewhere, so I concentrated my efforts there. Then my creative assistant, my dear disability service dog, 'Tik' died. That put a spanner in the works. But now I'm back to give etsy another go.

It took me several years for me to build courage to open an etsy shop. My work not to everyone's taste, inspired as it is by 'Cabinets of Curiosities' & museum collections. But for those who do like original, the different, the slightly dark & left of field, please enjoy & do have a good rummage around looking at my creations.

Do make sure you check for items tucked in the darker corners.

About

The Art of Kuriology - 'Cabinet of Curiosities' inspired creations

I call myself 'The Kuriologist' & my work - 'The Art of Kuriology'. For ten years I was virtually housebound with a fully diagnosed condition. During this time to fight boredom & to stay creative, I taught myself to sculpt using primarily recycled, re-purposed &/or found items. This, purely for my own pleasure & was to add objects & artifacts which I could otherwise not afford, to my own 'Cabinet of Curiosities' collection.

I was creating contemporary, hopefully highly individual, unique & unusual mixed media & assemblage sculptures. My work is inspired by traditional museum Kunst Wunderkammer oddities & ‘Cabinets of Curiosities’. My umbrella inspiration of art includes subjects inspired by mythology, folklore, taxidermy, witchcraft, classical Greek & Roman sculpture, natural history & other such antique & vintage artifacts, specimens, & object d’art.

Then along came my Disability Service Dog. Able to more easily leave the house, I became a little more proactive within the constraints of my circumstances.

• My work also part of the Outsider Art ‘Alternative Visions’ touring exhibition. I have/had sculpture artwork featuring digitally at Cheltenham gallery, Bristol Museum & Gallery, Poole Museum & Gallery, & Falmouth Art Gallery touring 2017/18.
• In June 2017 my 1st solo sculpture exhibition at award winning Helston Museum in Cornwall. The Kuriologist Art exhibition 'From behind closed doors' - dubbed by the West Briton & Cornishman newspapers as the - ‘Museum of the Impossible’.
• Recently I spoke at Falmouth University August 2017 as invited guest speaker to southwest museum curators, art fund providers, Uni staff, & other culturally interested parties in Cornwall, about - ‘Kuriology Art - inspired by museums’. The event supported by the Cornwall Museum Partnership
• I am creator artist of the National UK LGBT History Month 2016 - Cornwall Gay Sculpture Exhibition of male historical persons. As exhibited in 2017 at award winning Helston Museum, Cornwall.
• I have had individual work exhibited at Lifeboat Gallery, Porthleven. Also Steckfesters & Redwing galleries in Penzance, Cornwall. As well as years ago at the former Arts Club, Penzance.

Finally after two years of fretful deliberation, I took the plunge & opened an etsy shop/store. Baby steps.

I have no art training, no real idea what I'm doing & not much good at social media, but hope some people may like my creations & are both gentle & kind with any critique.

Old, belligerent, willful, cantankerous.... But then Ahhhh, there is that 1st cup of coffee in the morning! Self-taught artist out of necessity of having been housebound through disability. Various Museums & Galleries have exhibited my work.
