Beautiful handcrafted garments, made on historic knitting machines in Leicestershire, UK

I have been making on these historic knitting machines for the past 40 years. Having worked in the modern textile industry in Leicestershire, I was interested in the history of the trade, and began to look into the origins of machine knitting. The first knitting machine was invented by William Lee of Calverton Nottinghamshire in 1589, and was operated entirely by hand/foot power. I bought a set of these framework knitting machines, on which I make all my lace, from the Nottingham area where they were still used until the 1970's. The machines were all built in the 1840's. I was lucky enough to meet some of the old framework knitters and learn about the trade. I now operate the machines to make these beautiful scarves, shawls, squares and stoles in my workshop in Leicestershire.

I make the snoods on a set of vintage, hand operated, circular knitting machines which were invented in 1872. Most of these machines are about 100 years old and were used in the Leicester area for making hosiery.

Whilst modern machinery has taken over in the knitwear industry, I continue to hand manufacture all of my garments on the two sets of vintage machines. I believe that I am now the only person to commercially make lace on the framework knitting machines.
I have been selling my handcrafted garments at craft shows around the UK for many years, but now I want to make them available to buy online.

Each garment comes with a leaflet outlining the history of the knitting machine on which it was made. The garments are very delicate, light and warm, and make beautiful gifts and keepsakes. Each one has been handcrafted by me on one of my vintage knitting machines, and I then finish, press, check and package them individually to send to the customer.

A video of me operating a handframe can be seen here:
I have been a member of the Worshipful Company of Framework Knitters since 1995.
The company was incorporated by Oliver Cromwell in 1657, and still meets in the City of London every year to regulate the trade. I also demonstrate the handframe knitting machine at the Abbey Pumping Station in Leicester on some of their special event days.
