Watercolour Work, Primary Teaching and Raising Creative Little Ones

🌸Welcome to Little Flowers by Sligo🌸

I set up Little Flowers after having my second daughter. I was on maternity leave from Primary Teaching at the time and I had begun to pick up my drawing again after a long break concentrating on my teaching career. I completed an art degree down in Lancashire in addition to my teacher training - at the time I worked a lot with acrylics on very large canvases. As with many things in life, as my circumstances changed, my style of art work did too and it became a wonderful way to relax.

I initially focused upon illustrated letters and children's names with my own girls in mind - focusing on cute creatures and flowers (both my children have flowers as their middle names, hence my shop name) and as friends and family asked for commissioned pieces, my portfolio grew to include a much wider range of paintings and products.

I have been a primary teacher for 19 years and have worked across the primary age rages. I have taught art and design within a middle school setting, produced a creative curriculum focus within a large city primary and have run countless art clubs, classes and exhibitions. Over the years, it has become increasingly challenging to maintain a creative focus in schools given the push towards maths and English but I have always tried to maintain a consistent creative presence in my classrooms as art is so essential for children to develop their creativity, express their feelings and calm the mind.

My illustrations are heavily influenced by my love of children’s literature and I adore drawing animals. I always begin with initial sketches which I play around with before putting pen to paper. I use fine liners for all my detailed work and then I add the watercolour layers before going back to more fine liner and then sometimes adding colour pencil detail. For my more cartoon style drawings I use Promarker pens which give a wonderful digitally produced look whilst still being completely handmade. I stretch my own paper for paint work and I use local small businesses for all my framing, mounting and printing needs. I think it is really important to support other local and small businesses where possible.

I now teach part time and work on my own art and my Etsy business and I absolutely love the balance I am discovering of doing a day job that I love but also pursuing my own creative ideas. My girls are avid creatives and love helping me with the photographing process as well as watching me work.
