A Passion for Pillows!

I make unique and beautiful cushions made from genuine vintage kimono fabric. These cushions aren’t really meant to be sat on, the material is far too special, but are intended as works of art, preserving ancient techniques for years to come.

In-between the school run, family life and running a busy home, you will find me in my studio where I am surrounded by the fabrics I have collected, making beautiful cushions and other unique accessories for the home.

My cushions are made from kimono from the 1950′s to the 1980′s. I carefully select fabrics taken from de-constructed kimono, direct from Japan – all are of exquisite quality and design; some surprisingly graphic and Eames inspired , others hand-painted or heavily embroidered from wedding kimono. I carefully crop the patterns to look good as cushions and sew these into a precious article of desire. Sometimes cutting the fabric can be very painful! A whole kimono is constructed from just one roll of fabric called a silk bolt or ‘tanmono’. It is an exact length and width and nothing gets wasted. This in turn denotes the finished size of my cushions!

    Kimono silk is my passion and I cannot live without it! I have been selling as Ribbonreal on Etsy for over eight years now. It's the perfect creative outlet after giving up my job as a magazine Art Director to become a full time mother of twins.

* I love to 'keep it real', therefore I do not 'photoshop' my photographs and I work sympathetically with vintage materials, respecting the age and history of the cloth.

* I will happily undertake commissions - just get in touch!

Returns and exchange details
You have 7 days, from receipt, to notify me if you wish to cancel your order or exchange an item. When returning an item, the postage and packaging cost must be covered by the buyer. The item must be returned in its' original condition.

Please note: any items that are personalised, bespoke or made-to-order to your specific requirements cannot be returned or refunded

* If you are not happy with your purchase I would like to find out why before we agree on returns - I am only a small shop and cannot fund returns. Sorry.

Sadly, Ribbonreal cannot take responsibility for items damaged or lost in the post. Utmost care is taken to package the items safely. They are a labour of love with many cushions being completely unique (and irreplaceable) and I would be as distressed as you if anything happened to them! If you wish to upgrade the level of posting method (at extra cost) please contact me when you make your initial purchase.
Payment for purchases and commissions is required upfront before dispatch.
* Please note VAT or any other sales tax is not included on any of my items as I am not VAT registered or registered to collect any form of sales tax. This is normal in the UK and dependant on the size of business. The notification beneath each item price is Etsy generated and has been applied generically to all items on Etsy.
Regrettably due the significant rises in postage costs in the UK, our shipping prices have had to increase, in some cases beyond belief! I am aware that many of my customers are in far off places and I would hate to alienate people due to these costs. My costs are for first class mail which delivers within 1-3 days in the UK, and 5-10 days elsewhere. If you are in no hurry to receive your item and would like a reduced postage price, please contact me, however do be aware that your item could then take up to 28 days to arrive! If you wish to upgrade the level of posting method (at extra cost) please contact me when you make your initial purchase. Tracked shipping is also available on request at extra cost. Please get in touch for details.

All items are wrapped as environmentally as possible with care taken to protect your purchase on it's journey. Please recycle as much of the packaging as you can.

This Privacy Policy describes how and when I collect, use, and share information when you purchase an item from me, contact me, or otherwise use my services through or its related sites and services.

This Privacy Policy does not apply to the practices of third parties that I do not own or control, including Etsy or any third party services you access through Etsy. You can reference the Etsy Privacy Policy to learn more about its privacy practices.

To fulfil your order, you must provide me with certain information (which you authorised Etsy to provide to me), such as your name, email address, postal address and the details of the product that you’re ordering. You may also choose to provide me with additional personal information (for a custom order of cushions, for example), if you contact me directly.

I rely on a number of legal bases to collect, use, and share your information, including:
- as needed to provide my services, such as when I use your information to fulfil your order, to settle disputes, or to provide customer support;
- when you have provided your affirmative consent, which you may revoke at any time, such as by signing up for my mailing list;
- if necessary to comply with a legal obligation or court order or in connection with a legal claim, such as retaining information about your purchases if required by tax law;
- as necessary for the purpose of my legitimate interests, if those legitimate interests are not overridden by your rights or interests, such as 1) providing and improving my services. I use your information to provide the services you requested and in my legitimate interest to improve my services; and 2) Compliance with the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use. I use your information as necessary to comply with my obligations under the Etsy Seller Policy and Terms of Use.

Information about my customers is important to my business. I share your personal information for very limited reasons and in limited circumstances, as follows:
- Etsy. I share information with Etsy as necessary to provide you with my services and comply with my obligations under both the Etsy Seller Policy and Etsy Terms of Use.
- Service providers. I engage certain trusted third parties to perform functions and provide services to my shop, such as delivery companies. I will share your personal information with these third parties, but only to the extent necessary to perform these services.
- Business transfers. If I sell or merge my business, I may disclose your information as part of that transaction, only to the extent permitted by law.
- Compliance with laws. I may collect, use, retain, and share your information if I have a good belief that it is reasonably necessary to: (a) respond to legal process or to government requests; (b) enforce my agreements, terms and policies; (c) prevent, investigate, and address fraud and other illegal activity, security, or technical issues; or (d) protect the rights, property, and safety of my customers, or others.
- Data Retention. I retain your personal information only for as long as necessary to provide you with my services and as described in my Privacy Policy. However, I may also be required to retain this information to comply with my legal and regulatory obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce my agreements. I generally keep your data for up to7 years (as required by UK tax law).
- Transfers of Personal Information Outside the EU. I may store and process your information through third-party hosting services in the US and other jurisdictions. As a result, I may transfer your personal information to a jurisdiction with different data protection and government surveillance laws than your jurisdiction. If I am deemed to transfer information about you outside of the EU, I rely on Privacy Shield as the legal basis for the transfer, as Google Cloud is Privacy Shield certified.

If you reside in certain territories, including the EU, you have a number of rights in relation to your personal information. While some of these rights apply generally, certain rights apply only in certain limited cases. I describe these rights below:
- Access. You may have the right to access and receive a copy of the personal information I hold about you by contacting me using the contact information below.
- Change, restrict, delete. You may also have rights to change, restrict my use of, or delete your personal information. Apart from exceptional circumstances (like where I am required to store data for legal reasons) I will generally delete your personal information upon request.
- Object. You can object to (i) my processing of some of your information based on my legitimate interests and (ii) receiving marketing messages from me after providing your express consent to receive them. In such cases, I will delete your personal information unless I have compelling and legitimate grounds to continue using that information or if it is needed for legal reasons.
- Complain. If you reside in the EU and wish to raise a concern about my use of your information (and without prejudice to any other rights you may have), you have the right to do so with your local data protection authority.
