RECLAIMED WOOD FURNITURE

Our reclaimed wood furniture parts are handmade from salvaged structural timbers such as roof rafters, purlins and joists.

Unseasoned wood was often used in these industrial buildings, and as the timbers dried in-situ natural shakes in the wood occurred through natural atmospheric changes. We consider these as unique character of the reclaimed timber we use and try and keep as much of this as part of each item of furniture as we can. As well as this, we try to let the wood show as much character from it's previous life by hand finishing each piece carefully while still keeping the finish and durability of the wood practical.

Preparing your home for our Furniture

All our wood is handpicked, kiln dried and then manufactured with a moisture content of between 10%-14% however your home’s moisture content is roughly 6% or lower. Meaning you will need to let your table acclimatize slowly to the change in atmosphere. Ideally in a cool room and slowly increase the heating temperature over a period of time.
Wood is a natural product and is prone to slight movement and loss of moisture so do not put the piece straight into a hot room, turn underfloor heating off, turn down radiators and slowly increase the heat over time. Do not place the item in direct sunlight or next to an open fire/heat source such as radiator or aga.

Preparing your home for our Furniture Cont.

Small amounts of movement are normal and add to the character of the piece. Made in the Cellar cannot be held accountable for large amounts of movement if the following guidelines aren’t followed. If you have any excessive movement or are concerned about how to care for your furniture please contact us direct.

How to clean your wooden Tops

Our wooden tops have been finished with a water based clear matt wood varnish which offers a suitable amount of protection without losing the natural finish of the wood.
We recommend that you use place mats and coasters when using the table and any spills to be cleaned up straight away and not left to sit on the wood (just like you would with any piece of furniture).
The varnish used on the table has an A+ hygienic rating. Its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial effect makes it a perfect product for achieving clean and safe surfaces free from fungi and bacterial colonies.

How to clean your wooden Tops cont.

As it is a hygienic finish – no antibacterial sprays or cleaners must be used on the tops as it will compromise the finish and can cause a reaction in the varnish. The tabletop can only be cleaned using a damp (not sopping wet) cloth with luke warm water only – no soaps or cleaners are required (never use bleach or aggressive cleaners on your table top). Once wiped down this must be immediately dried off with a dry towel/cloth.
If these directions are not followed this will invalidate your guarantee and we will not be able to help in the unlikely event that issues were to arise with your furniture.

How to clean your wood Tops cont.

Although the varnish offers a suitable amount of protection against spills it must be remembered that the material underneath is wood and is liable to dent and scratch if care isn’t taken, but this can add to the charm and character of the wood.

Varnish Application:

Later down the line if you wanted to refinish the wooden top on your piece to maintain it’s appearance and protection which we recommend when the item gets regular use, you can purchase the varnish direct from us. Just drop us an email to enquiries@madeinthecellar.co.uk as we would be happy to help.

To add an extra layer of varnish or to keep it looking in great condition you would need to clean the top down as advised in the cleaning section and then dry thoroughly. Then to apply the varnish; a thin layer, best applied with a sponge roller or brush, should be applied in line with the grain of wood ensuring an even coat with no noticeable streaks, and then left to dry for around 6 hours or overnight to allow time to cure.
