Announcement   colourful | tactile | distinctive | lampwork glass and silver earrings

I love the concept of wearable art and feel my lampwork is just that, each piece is created individually, mindfully layering colours, elements and details one at a time to create little works of art.

I handcraft my lampwork glass earrings in my home studio in the picturesque county of Somerset, England, surrounded by nature in the beautiful countryside from which I draw much of my inspiration. I like to create designs that are a little bit different, full of colour and texture providing you with beautiful, distinctive, handmade jewellery to express your individuality and help you feel beautifully adorned.

I feel immensely blessed to be able to run my business full time and as a one woman band I get to wear many hats, designer, maker, photographer, marketer and dispatch to name a few, it’s work that I absolutely love and a lifestyle made possible by you, who values handmade, quality and the opportunity to own something created with love and care, touched by the hands of the person who brought it in to existence. So thank you.

{STUDIO HOURS}
My studio hours are between 10:00 & 17:00 (GMT) Monday to Friday and I check my email etc at various points throughout the day in-between making, so will usually reply to a convo or email the same day. If you contact me outside of my studio hours I will get back to you the next working day.

{WHY I CHOOSE THE MATERIALS I DO}
I believe quality jewellery starts with quality materials. For all of my lampwork pieces I use high quality sodalime glass from Italy, which offers a wide range of gorgeous colours and yields consistently high results.

Where possible I use Argentium sterling silver for my bails, closures and earring fittings. I choose it due to several attributes that matter to me. Firstly it is more eco-friendly than regular sterling silver and I like to tread as lightly as I can on mother earth. Secondly many people who can’t wear sterling due to skin sensitivities can wear Argentium without any reaction, and thirdly it is more durable and tarnish resistant than regular sterling silver.

All my stud earrings have surgical steel posts which the majority of people can wear without any adverse reaction.

{MADE TO ORDER ITEMS}
Many of my designs have an organic form and are made by hand one at a time, therefore the exact shape and placement of some of the details and elements will differ from piece to piece. I try to convey this in my photographs giving different examples of each design, however, the overall aesthetic and design of the piece you order will be the same as the examples shown.

My current lead time for sending out orders is 2 weeks. If you require your jewellery sooner, please convo me as I may be able to accommodate your request.

Additional Policies and FAQs

JEWELLERY DESCRIPTIONS AND SIZES
I make every effort to describe my jewellery as accurately as possible, giving all the dimensions in centimetres/millimetres and inches and where possible examples of the designs being worn to show how they look on or held in my hand so you get a good idea of scale. I also take very close up photos using a macro setting to show all the intricate details. It can be tricky to capture the true colour and depth of glass in a photo, but I do my best to make all the images as true as possible to the piece, please also be aware that some monitors and screens can show colours differently. If there is an aspect that you would like to know that I have not included in an items description, please contact me and I will do my best to provide the information.
MADE TO ORDER ITEMS : many of my designs have an organic form and are made by hand one at a time, therefore the exact shape and placement of some of the details and elements will differ from piece to piece. I try to convey this in my photographs giving different examples of each design, however, the overall aesthetic and design of the piece you order will be the same as the examples shown.

>>>>>oOo<<<<<

CARING FOR YOUR MAID OF GLASS JEWELLERY
All of my jewellery is made using high quality raw materials and my lampwork glass pieces are annealed in a digitally controlled kiln to ensure they are as durable as possible. However, they are at the end of the day glass and should a piece endure force exerted on it or be dropped or hit against something it could result in damage. The bails on my pendants and some of my earrings are secured to the glass with a high quality, high strength bonding agent, therefore I would advise against immersing these items for an extended period of time in water, using solvent cleaners, or contact with oils, perfumes or household cleaners and chemicals, these substances may also have adverse effects on the silver elements of your jewellery.
Your Maid of Glass jewellery can be cleaned with gentle soap and warm water and a soft brush if needed, a buff with a soft dry cloth will leave them sparkling. Any silver elements can be buffed with a silver cleaning cloth to bring back their shine.

About

Who is Maid of Glass?

I’m Tamsyn the lampwork glass artist behind Maid of Glass.

I’ve been creating lampwork glass beads since taking a weekend course in 2009. I’ve always loved the appearance of glass, its sculptural qualities and the way it interacts with light and that weekend was a real life changing moment, I was hooked from the very first wonky bead I made.

I had been making jewellery for some years before I got into lampwork so it was a natural progression to start incorporating my glass creations into my jewellery designs. I love the concept of wearable art and feel my lampwork is just that, each piece is created individually, mindfully layering colours, elements and details one at a time to create little works of art.

I create my lampwork jewellery in my home studio in the picturesque county of Somerset, England, surrounded by nature in the beautiful countryside from which I draw much of my inspiration. I like to create designs that are a little bit different, full of delight, colour and texture providing you with beautiful, handmade, enchanting jewellery to express your individuality and help you feel beautifully adorned.

I feel immensely blessed to be able to run my business full time and as a one woman band I get to wear many hats, designer, maker, photographer, marketing and dispatch to name a few, it’s work that I absolutely love and a lifestyle made possible by you, who values handmade, quality and the opportunity to own something created with love and care, touched by the hands of the person who brought it in to existence. So thank you.

My inspiration
Nature has a way of captivating me with her intricate details and it’s one of my main sources of inspiration, which often becomes stylised in my designs imbuing its essence into my work.

How I make my lampwork glass pieces?
It all starts with rods of coloured glass, steel sticks called mandrels and a really hot flame (around 750oC). Melting the glass rod in the flame, I wind the molten glass round the mandrel, and while molten; the glass can be shaped using various tools or just gravity. I like to add lots of texture and detail to my work using frit (glass smashed into tiny bits like sea salt), stringer (skinny strands of glass), murrini (little slices from a rod of glass with a pattern running through it like a stick of rock), etc. I make all of these elements myself; each one is added and melted in or shaped one by one. Each lampwork piece can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours to make depending on the size and complexity. As soon as a piece is finished it goes into my digitally controlled kiln, where it is cooled very slowly over a period of hours, this is the crucial process of annealing, it removes stresses in the glass caused by all that manipulating, making them as strong and durable as possible. Once cooled I remove them from their mandrels, scrub the bead-release (clay-like stuff that stops the glass sticking to the metal) out of the hole of each piece and get them ready for their next step, being made in to finished pieces of enchanting jewellery.

Why I choose the materials I do
I believe quality jewellery starts with quality materials. For all of my lampwork pieces I use high quality sodalime glass from Italy, which yields consistently high results.
Where possible I use Argentium sterling silver for my bails, closures and earring fittings. I choose it due to several attributes that matter to me. Firstly it is more eco-friendly than sterling silver and I like to tread as lightly as I can on mother earth. Secondly many people who can’t wear sterling due to skin sensitivities can wear Argentium without any reaction, and thirdly it is more durable and tarnish resistant than regular sterling silver.
