    About

    Affordable Wearable Art

Thank you for visiting Making is Key.

Hello there, I'm Jenny. I'm a UK based artist this new shop Making is Key (MiK) is a place to share hand embroidered repurposed and upcycled garments.

    A little about my background

Over the past twenty years I’ve worked in visual art, theatre and film. Very much a multidisciplinary artist I like to use different mediums however around 2007 I started specialising in hand embroidery.

I took to embroidery when I was little and my grandmother taught me how to hand stitch basic designs. It was an activity I would keep coming back to until I realised it could become part of my practice as an artist.

    About MiK

About a year ago I was preparing for an exhibition. One of the pictures I’d made had an abstracted rose motif which looked like it could work as tattoo or graphic for clothes. So I started experimenting…

After a few months of research, designing and stitching I have a few nice pieces to sell.

The embroidered clothes in this shop are all based on my own sketches. Some are designs reworked from some of my pictures, others have been designed specifically for a particular garment.

    Stock, Pricing, Commissions etc

The clothes are a mixture of brand new items and second hand garments which all serve as a kind of canvas for these affordable artworks.

Pricing varies according to time taken and intricacy for each design, and whether the garment is new or pre-worn.

All items have been tested for colour fastness. In terms of care I recommend placing garments in a laundry bag or pillowcase when washing, using a hand wash or wool wash cycle at 30 degrees or lower.

I hope to offer commissions soon.
