About

Going Against The Grain

Hi, my name is Mike. After a career in insurance broking in London and Sydney, I now live in Marazion, Cornwall.

I have always had an appreciation for wood, and enjoyed working with my hands. The positive response I received from friends and family after making a few pieces from some reclaimed oak beams that came my way, has ultimately (along with a weekend course in blacksmithing) led to the starting of MarazionOak, my one man workshop specializing in creating handmade oak homewares with iron and steel fixtures and fittings.

Working with oak and iron is a true pleasure, the qualities of each are remarkable. Oak is strong, durable, majestic and to our ancestors sacred. Iron is a ductile, relatively soft metal, which makes it superb for fashioning. Combining these materials from the natural and man-made worlds allows me to bring an industrial character to the oak’s traditional feel.

Each piece is individually cut or split from solid oak timber waney edged boards, then sanded by hand and oil rubbed before a final wax finish is applied. Once this process is complete the iron and steel work is added.

During this process, great care is taken to ensure that as much of the wood’s natural form and imperfections are maintained and enhanced.

All the timber and as much of the iron and steel work as possible is sourced locally and as such MarazionOak is proud to be a member of the Made in Cornwall Scheme. This is an approved origin scheme operated by Cornwall Council’s Trading Standards Service. All members have been certified by experienced Trading Standards Officers, providing customers with the assurance that the products are genuinely made in Cornwall, using components sourced from Cornwall where possible, and that the product meets all relevant UK and EU Regulations. Buying from a Made in Cornwall member benefits the Cornish economy by keeping revenue within the County, helping us to support our local communities. Refer www.cornwall.gov.uk/madeincornwall.

If you live locally or are holidaying in Cornwall, more of my pieces can be found for sale at "The Craft Collective", 90 Fore Street, Redruth, Cornwall TR15 2BP or at "Treasure" 73 Market Jew Street, Penzance, Cornwall, TR18 2LJ.
