Marsh Willow was formed a few years ago when basketmaker, Julie Gurr, and her partner, James Strangeways, began growing willow on Romney Marsh, in East Sussex.

Julie has been making baskets for over 20 years. She was taught basketry skills by traditional basketmakers in England , Scotland and Ireland. Her main material is willow and as well as making more traditional functional baskets she now uses the skills she has perfected to make more sculptural forms. James is now Julie's apprentice and also sometimes sells the baskets he makes in this shop too.

As the willow plants become established and more willow is planted the harvest of willow each year increases. This means that more and more homegrown willow is used in the baskets made. All other willow is sourced in the UK or a from a grower in Belgium a short distance away from where Marsh Willow are based on the South Coast of England.

The Artist's Charcoal is a handmade by product of the basketmaking using offcuts of willow rods.
