I decided to be a full-time Artist in a World Wide Pandemic.
Hey you, my name is Mat and welcome to my Etsy store. I started this store to share my work and make my dream of become a full-time artist a reality. After gaining my Bachelor Honours Degree in Contemporary art and Contextualised Practice I went on to exhibit at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy in the New Contemporaries exhibition. I then went on to train as a Secondary School Art Teacher but realised I never had any time for my own art. After a string of dead-end jobs later I didn't know what do to.
Then the Pandemic hit.
While many people were unsure what to do or think I felt determined. Now with nothing to do but stay inside, I began looking at my art once more. This quote kept coming back to me, "you can fail at the things you don't want to do so you might as well do what you want". Since leaving my degree I hadn't really given art a shot. Concerned with providing for my Son and Partner I had shunned my art practice for more sensible choices. But now, with the World on lockdown, it was clear to me. I was going to be full-time artist and provide for my family. It was not a question of if but when it would happen. Spurred on by this realisation I used my days in lockdown to create as much work as I could with the goal of putting it on Etsy and starting my career as an Artist. And the rest is history.
I live and work in my flat in Perth Scotland with my four-year-old son Felix, Partner Megan and Chihuahua Daisy. I don’t have a studio so all my creations are made in my kitchen (in between meals).
My work is influenced by the contrast between the traditional and the digital both visual and conceptually. I take everyday images and manipulate them in photoshop before turning them into paintings. As I live in Scotland, I have often surrounded by grey skies and washed-out colours which is why I make bright, colourful art. I am heavily inspired by music which is why a lot of paintings titles are song names or lyrics.
Outside of Etsy I am also a freelance photographer, Muralist, and also take commissions.
