Announcement
Most of my items are made to order and can take 2-3 weeks to complete, but items are despatched as soon as they are ready, so they may be on their way in under 10 days. If you need something quicker, let me know and we can discuss the possibilities.
Anyhow, on with the main message! My name is Mike and everything you see in this shop is made by me in my workshop. Meadowgate Leather is located on the north-east coast of Essex in England. There is no machinery used in my workshop, no electronics, nothing is computerised or robotic. Everything you see has been cut by hand, punched by hand, hand-dyed, hand-painted and hand-stitched.
I take pride in both my work and on dispatching my goods very promptly. Each of my finished products is unique - every item made by hand has a slight nuance, making it different from the one before it and the one following it. All my products are completely handmade and hand sewn. The only item I use a sewing machine for is, the protective calico sleeve in which your journal cover will be contained!
Customer Service: If you're not happy, then I'm not happy!
Overseas buyers: Delivery will be via Royal Mail and your own postal service. From the experience of many thousands of packages sent around the world, I know that when I post a package, it is on an aircraft out of the UK within a day. Depending where it is going, the delivery can then take a while, often down to Customs checking it in. Some customers say they receive their item with a week, while others find the delivery can take over 3 weeks from my despatch. It all depends how fast your postal & custom services can work.
My online catalogue currently includes mainly leather traveller's journal covers. I always carefully source my vegetable tanned leather which usually comes from either English or Italian tanneries.
The stitching uses a length of waxed thread with a needle at each end. The holes for the stitches are marked with special stitch prickers, and each hole finally broken through individually with an awl. The hand stitching is incredibly resilient and with proper care, my leather pieces could last a lifetime.
My work needs patience, a tool designed for the job, and time. Lots of time.
Most of my custom made items are available in a variety of colours. The colour charts shown can be but a guide only as one screen will represent colours differently from another and one piece of leather takes on the dye more enthusiastically than the next. From time to time, specifications may vary slightly, but only in an an effort to ever improve the product.

5 out of 5 starsAbsolutely in love with my TN cover! Mike was super communicative when I asked questions, and the finished product is customised exactly how I wanted it (it smells so good too!). I can already see that the leather is going to age really nicely, and having the elastic closure come from the spine rather than the back cover makes it far superior to the Midori TN for actually being able to write in it. It fits all 3 of my chosen inserts easily with no overhang (I got the "ultra" option on the overhang). Looking forward to taking this abroad in a few weeks, and using it for years to come!

5 out of 5 starsMy TN arrived this morning and OMG! Perfection! The size, the leather, the stitching the attention to detail, the communication with the maker (I made a change after submitting my order and it was accommodated graciously and seamlessly) just everything was absolutely spot on. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 starsI’m just in love with my notebook. It’s a minimalist model, and that makes it more tricky because every little imperfection can be more obvious, but Mike made it with great attention to every little detail, and that’s what makes the difference. I’m extremely pleased with my purchase, and it arrived earlier than expected!

About MeadowgateLeather
Genuine leather items professionally produced in England
I love the idea of turning a raw material into something that can posses both beauty and charm but simultaneously can be an object of utility and practical use.
Leather is a wonderful material. It's smell is evocative and it can look very luxurious.
I’ve made many different leather items over the years – some large, some small, some decorated, some shiny, some not. For now, I am concentrating on making Travellers’ Journal Covers for the many wonderful people of the worldwide journaling community who shop on Etsy.
I am often asked what are the qualities and feels of the different leathers, and what are the colours really like? Hopefully I can briefly explain here:
All my products use Vegetable-Tanned Leather. These hides are mostly cows, although they may also be from goat, pig, sheep, buffalo and other animals. The 'vegetable' used in the tanning process can include tree bark and oak leaves as they are high in tannic acid. Most of my hides are sourced from either the UK, Italy, Canada or USA. Vegetable tanning has been around for a millennium and it can take months to tan a single hide.
The leather used is what is termed 'full-grain', referring to the outermost part of the animal skin. This is the toughest, hardest-wearing part of the skin, but also means it has no doubt seen some 'action' during the life of the animal. It may have been in contact with barbed wire fences, trees or posts and may have sustained insect bites or other injuries. You will never see any of the larger skin abrasions, as I don’t use these parts, but items may include some light scratches or marks here and there providing evidence, if it were needed, that it is the genuine article.
Do not confuse the full-grain used here for what some pass for the best, which however, is in fact a 'split', where the thickness of a leather has been split in two by a machine and the lower piece given a synthetic texture.
Of my Journal ranges, the OAK, the ACORN, the DOUBLE ACORN and the OAKLEAF use a thick leather (approx 3mm) which, if fed with something like Neatsfoot Oil, will become quite reasonably supple, but still retain that feeling of something substantial. The inside surface may range from very smooth to slightly unsmooth. As with allmy leathers, treated well, they could last a lifetime.
The MULBERRY covers are also made of thick 3mm leather, but this has been dyed at the tannery, rather than myself. The Mulberrys are very supple and almost buttery to touch and I find they are more willing to lay flat by themselves than other leathers.
The SNOWBELL, WILLOW, CATKIN and TWIN CATKIN use approx 2mm leather, which has a similar surface to the Oak etc, but as it is thinner, is more flexible.
DARK FOREST leather is only about 1.4mm thick, so is very malleable and even a little floppy! It possesses a great quality called ‘pull up’ which allows it to patinate easily. Any scratches, digs or marks the surface picks up turn into shades of brown, giving the cover a nicely worn-in appearance.
Pockets and wallet sections are made from Kip leather, which is about 1 to 1.2mm thick, but still very strong.
take care,
Mike

Photography, broadcasting and computing used to be my life, but now, living on the North-Essex coast of England, leather has taken over. We have five children, a rabbit and a garden where I try to grow fruit & vegetables.
Shop policies
All the items you see here have been handmade in my leather workshop. This means they have been cut from quality vegetable-tanned leather, tooled or punched where required by me, and have been hand-stitched and finished – every inch of them by my hands. Goods made from veg-tanned leather will last many times longer than factory-made items – very often they last long enough to be handed on to the next generation!
Some of my items, you will note are 'natural' – ie. They have not been dyed or treated with anything. You will find that these items will adopt their own color with age, gradually turning a beautiful tan color as they are handled and exposed to sunlight. Other items will have been dyed using professional dyes, as much as possible, using eco-friendly products.
I try and photograph all items in a way that will show their true colour, but please be aware that results from different screens may vary.

Returns and exchange details
The customer is responsible for paying the return postage and ensuring it's safe delivery. Any returned goods must arrive in 'unused' condition and the buyer is responsible for this and cost of postage.
IF returning an item FROM OUTSIDE the UK, please mark the package 'RETURNED GOODS' so that it does not attract Import Customs Duty. The Customer is responsible for makring the package thus and any package not marked and hence charged duty will have this amount subtracted from any refund.
If an item arrives damaged-in-transit, please take photos and contact me immediately so that we may resolve the situation
Payment
Delivery
As standard, within the UK, I post Royal Mail First Class so your item should be with you within a day or two. Some items may require a signature on delivery.
Internationally, I post Airmail which should take about 3 days to Western Europe, 5 days to Eastern Europe and major cities around the world. Everywhere should receive the item with about 7 days. These estimates are however just that, estimates, and even though I have posted the parcel on time, the delivery date can be affected by adverse weather etc, so please allow extra time for postal delays, and of course customs. Larger items are tracked so you and I will be able to check on the progress of the delivery.
Where more than one item has been purchased, the postage value of the larger item takes precedence: ie. when purchasing a card of thread, I will gladly combine with up to five cards total of similar thread for the same postage. However, purchasing a thread card along with a much heavier item will attract the higher postage rate. I'm sure that is common sense to everybody, but thought it ought to be here just in case. However, the checkout system does not always see it this way, so in the event of a shortfall, I will contact you to discuss the situation.
If 21 days have expired since receiving dispatch notification and you have still not received your parcel, please contact me and we will endeavour to resolve the situation.
Be aware that I will dispatch to your Etsy registered address, so please ensure it displays all the correct details. If your parcel is returned to me because the postal service is unable to deliver, I will contact you to rearrange delivery, at further cost to the customer.
Ready-to-ship items will be posted within 1-2 business days.
Made-to-order and Custom orders will ship as soon as they are ready, shipping estimates will be shown on the order, but in reality, I usually better these.
