Midcentury Fabrics - Vintage Postwar Textiles from Fifities, Sixties & Seventies

My love-affair with midcentury textiles began in the 1990s when I curated a major exhibition about 1950s design and wrote my first book, The New Look: Design in the Fifties (Thames & Hudson, 1991). I've been researching and collecting post-war textiles and design ever since, highlighting the careers of leading British textile designer such as Lucienne Day, Shirley Craven and Alastair Morton, and leading British textile companies such as Edinburgh Weavers, Hull Traders and Heal Fabrics.

My books include 'Contemporary' Architecture and Interiors of the 1950s (Phaidon, 1994); The Sixties: Decade of Design Revolution (Phaidon, 1998); Robin and Lucienne Day: Pioneers of Contemporary Design (Mitchell Beazley, 2001); 20th Century Pattern Design: Textile & Wallpaper Pioneers (Mitchell Beazley, 2002); Bernat Klein: Textile Designer, Artist, Colourist (Bernat Klein Trust, 2009); From Atoms to Patterns: Crystal Structure Designs from the 1951 Festival of Britain (Richard Dennis, 2008); Shirley Craven and Hull Traders: Revolutionary Fabrics and Furniture 1957-1980 (ACC, 2009); Alastair Morton and Edinburgh Weavers: Visionary Textiles and Modern Art (V&A, 2012); Modern British Furniture: Design Since 1945 (V&A, 2013); Ercol: Furniture in the Making (Richard Dennis, 2013).

Because midcentury fabrics are so striking, they work particularly well as decorative hangings. I use them extensively for curtains, cushions and wall hangings, both in my own home and in my Yorkshire holiday cottage Elmet Farmhouse near Hebden Bridge, which is furnished with midcentury modern and contemporary design. Elmet Farmhouse is available for rent throughout the year. For more details see www.elmetfarmhouse.co.uk

Guests at Elmet Farmhouse often tell me how much they enjoy the textiles and frequently ask where they can buy them. This has prompted me to set up my Etsy Shop so that other people can share my textile collection and sample the delights of micentury modern fabrics first-hand too.
