My NaviStitch Voyage

Hi, I am Sam, the creator and Stitcher behind NaviStitch. NaviStitch started in 2014 and has grown and evolved enormous amount in that time.

I am a Sailor and a Stitcher based in North Essex on the East coast. I have grown up on the Stour Estuary and never like to be too far from the water. I spent a good number of years as a Cook on Thames Sailing barges and they often feature in my work. In fact I still do a few Sailing Barge trips each year, I think I have salt water in my veins!

I love old navigation charts and they were the inspiration for NaviStitch. My work has evolved a little since then but all of my work either includes charts, hand stitch, machine stitch or sometimes all 3!

All original NaviStitch is hand-stitched directly into old and out of date navigation chart. Every piece is unique, no two will ever be the same.

The charts can vary greatly in age and often tell their own story with the tracks and marks left by genuine use at sea. I stitch mostly onto Admiralty charts but sometimes use Imray or Stamford charts, each chart has its own colour palette and I tone the threads to coordinate.

Many of the charts have creases, pencil/pen marks and show general signs of wear and tear, this is the natural patina of a used chart. Some of charts can be in very good condition but every chart is out of date so cannot be used for navigation purposes.

I then stitch by hand a nautical design such as a boat, anchor, compass or other nautical inspired motifs.

Most of greetings card designs start with a hand-stitched design and where charts are used this is under licence from the Hydrographic office. They are mostly A6 size, 300 gsm FSC certified card and are all blank on the inside for your own message. Some new collections are A5 in size and also include options for personalisation. My ranges and deigns are growing all the time, as I broaden my horizons I even have some designs now that are not nautical but they still include stitch.

My favourite piece of kit is my very beloved Vintage Bernina sewing machine in my studio. I won’t say how vintage it is but it is the same age as me and in far better condition! It purrs along for free motion embroidery which is now in some of my designs, and it stitches through the multiple layers of fabrics for the face masks with ease. I’m sure it will out live me!

Thanks for looking at my shop and I hope you see something you like. If you don’t then feel free to contact me about a custom order.

Frequently asked questions
Do you offer Wholesale?

I am pleased to offer my greetings cards on a Wholesale Basis for bricks and mortar shops. This is subject to minimum order quantities. I do not offer my face masks wholesale. Please contact me directly for more information.

Do you offer commissions?

I offer commissions for my original art. You can choose the chart location, design to be stitched and the size. This is subject to availability and sometimes the scale of the chart may dictate the sizes available or the suitability of a design. Custom designs, such as your own boat are available but do carry a surcharge for additional design work. Standard designs are designs already in use within my card designs.

Do you sell kits or instructions for your work?

Sorry but I do not. I have developed techniques that are unique to the way I produce my work. These techniques come from years of experience and learning and are what makes my work mine and original NaviStitch.
