About

A tragic event sparks an interest in machine knitting

I got interested in machine knitting quite by accident. An ex boyfriend was clearing out his attic, and offered me his ex-wife's knitting machine. I stored it in my own attic (and forgot all about it) until about a year later. In the UK we have fireworks displays on November 5th, and it's the one night of the year you keep your pets inside at night. Fraggle (a very lovable but stupid boy cat of 5 years) didn't come home that night, so to distract myself from the rising panic I dug out the knitting machine and tried to figure out how it all went together. It was without any instructions, and looked like it might receive satellite television if I set it up correctly.

I managed to get it going (kind of), but my first dress was a disaster that was knitted so tight it practically stood up on its own. It was a week before I had chance to put posters up around my street - and it turned out that a neighbour had found a dead cat matching Fraggle's description on her doorstep. It turned out to be the house opposite, and we think he may have been hit by a car - alas, he had very little road sense.

Anyway, with the help of some lovely ladies on rec.crafts. machine-knitting (on the old Usenet forums) I learnt all about sponge bars and rewinding my yarn correctly. I managed to source a copy of the manual and some punchcards and that was it, I was addicted. At first it was to distract me from my grief, but later on I realised I really enjoyed the process. It's not just a case of passing the carriage back and forth a few times and out pops a sweater, it's a lot more involved that that!

Since the first machine (circa 2001) I've traded up and expanded my collection of knitting machines, and I acquired a beautifully restored circular sock machine in 2009. Now I knit a lot (by hand and machine) and a lot of items go to Knit for Peace, a charity that redistributes knitted items to those in need.

Shop policies

Last updated on 24 February, 2017
I love making things, but I've run out of wardrobe space for all the things I've made. So you get to buy something hand-made with love.

I'm happy to make custom orders, which are excluded from my normal returns policy. Please allow 14 days from placement of custom order when buying - I may not have the required yarn in stock and I have work and other commitments too! :)

Traders, need some socks for display? Contact me and maybe we can work something out.

Payment
Paypal accepted. Items will not be shipped until payment has been received. If no payment is received within 5 days, the order will be cancelled. Please ensure your paypal shipping address is correct (or include the preferred shipping address in your order). If you are not a registered PayPal user, you may still pay for items by credit card through their website which is safe and secure.

Custom orders will not be processed until payment has been received.
Shipping
Items will be shipped to the address given on the Etsy order - please ensure it is correct! If the item is a present, please indicate the name and address of the recipient when making the order. I'm happy to send a gift receipt (no price indication) if requested.

I use 2nd class postage for UK purchases - I will aim to use signed for if it's economic for the buyer, ie "signed for" for socks but plain second class for small items eg scrunchies. For international purchases I try to use International Standard. Shipping is only done on business days and I will aim to have your item(s) in the mail within 3 days - if I'm away, there will be a note on the shop front indicating when orders will be processed.

International orders can take some time to arrive, and it's outside my control - if the item has not arrived after 5 weeks, please let me know!

Customs fees for international buyers are the responsibility of the buyer. I recycle my packaging where possible to keep my costs low.
Refunds and Exchanges
Happy to refund or exchange items if I am notified within 48 hours. Items must be returned in good condition. Postage cannot be refunded, and items are returned at the buyer's expense. This does not apply to custom orders, which are non-refundable.
Additional policies and FAQs
If you see something you like but it's not quite the right colour or size, contact me, maybe we can work something out!
