Japanese CHIGIRI-E Art & children’s illustrations direct from NorikoArt Studio

Noriko Matsubara is a Japanese artist, illustrator and author based in the North East of England.

She practices Japanese art form called CHIGIRI-E, traditionally created using hand-torn Japanese paper. Whilst her work is influenced by her Japanese heritage, the material she uses today is modern newspaper print which adds a special contemporary dimension to her work.

Noriko’s work is available as Limited Edition Giclée Prints. Due to the ephemeral nature of newspaper, archival digital print is the best way to keep the original colours of her CHIGIRI-E.

For more information of Noriko’s work, visit her website:

Noriko also writes and illustrates children's books about a pair of socks. "Bocchi and Pocchi: A Tale of Two Socks" is her first picture book. The 'Bocchi and Pocchi' series has been published in the UK and translated into 5 languages including Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Catalonian and Vietnamese. Her children's book illustrations are available as Giclée Prints.

Before becoming an artist, Noriko taught Japanese in Lebanon, Canada and the UK. A consequence of her travels was her decision to follow her passion, and she went on to study visual arts at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada and completed a MA in Fine Art at Central St Martin’s College of Art and Design in the UK.

She currently lives in Consett, County Durham with my husband and two children.
