Striving towards sustainable and environmentally friendly fibre crafts

OfTheCutDesigns is so called because all of the beautifully handcrafted items here are made from my canal boat on the Kennet and Avon Canal (the navigational part of the canal is known as 'the cut'). I knit, crochet and sew to create a range of individually made quality accessories, homewares and clothing whilst I continuously cruise along the beautiful canal. I also accept commissions for hand knitted sweaters and baby items, and I can work with you personally to pick a fibre and choose design features, to create a luxury garment that will last for years to come.

I have always been passionately creative and have always particularly loved fibre arts-as well as knitting and crochet, I enjoy embroidery and cross-stitch as hobbies. My grandma first taught me to knit aged 8 (my first item was a very holey dishcloth!) and over the years I have found myself constantly picking up new skills and techniques through tackling challenging projects. I especially love colourwork and fairisle and designing my own colourwork patterns, but also enjoy cable knitting (that's the twisty often celtic designs you see with aran sweaters). I design all my items individually (it mostly involves combining different basic patterns, and a surprising amount of maths!) and take great care to produce products that I am proud of-a lot of knitting time is spent carefully unpicking mistakes! My most recent challenge has been a commitment to myself to stop being enticed by cheap acrylic knitwear and put the time into creating beautiful hand knit natural fibre pieces for my own wardrobe. I find it's immensely more satisfying owning knitwear that you know is high quality, exactly what you want and with care can last for years (can't knit? Why not commission me to knit you something?)

Part of my shop ethos is to try and limit my impact on the environment. Clothing and fabric waste is a big environmental problem with many strands to it-fast fashion, the environmental impact of huge quantities of mass produced materials (cotton for example uses massive quantities of water to process), over laundering leading to water waste and clothes not lasting as long as they could. Because of this, I try to work with all natural, locally produced fibres as much as possible and love working with wool and alpaca. I strive to limit the use of manmade fibres in the yarns and material I work with to limit the environmental impact of plastics than can be shed from fibres like acrylics, polyester and nylon. In this vein, all my items also come with individual instructions to help you care for your items so that they need less laundering and therefore last longer.
