About

For those who want more than just mainstream!

I started my shop after working in a bridal boutique for a few years and found everything just a little bit... well 'samey'! I'd made a handful of colourful and themed garters for some of the shop brides and it wasn't long before I started getting asked for more unusual designs, to match hobbies and interests, wedding themes or just adding some fun to the proceedings. So I opened a little shop, predominantly making wedding garters in fun colours and themes.

In my free time, after being a keen movie costumer with my husband for several years, we gained an interest in Steampunk and historical costuming and began making our own outfits and accessories. It's really spiralled from there!

I now run Ooh La La Boudoir by myself, whilst my husband runs his own shop, called the Discombobulous Workshop. We love working from home where we get to spend our breaks and meals together, along with our two furbabies, out cats Ludo and Bucky.

We largely work separately on what we enjoy personally, but as many of our customers buy from us both when putting together a complete ensemble, you will occasionally find the some of our items in each of our shops.

I can't really say I have a particular 'style' anymore... I still love to make the Steampunk designs, but I also love to work on Gothic, Geeky, Lolita, Vintage, Cabaret, Pirate and Kawaii designs now. Through the many custom designs I've created over the years, my ideas, inspiration and creativity have evolved immensely!

My work has featured on Fashionablygeek.com, Steampunk Tendencies and Rocknrollbride.com aswell as Fashion51.com, Blikk.hu and Chinese Firefox.com

Some of my garter designs are also doing the rounds on Compopolitan.com, Buzzfeed, Boredpanda, Huffington Post and Rocknrollbride.com too!

I've also appeared in 1001 Steampunk Creations, International Steampunk Fashion books, twice in Living Bride Magazine and the Barnsley Chronicle. I was also an international finalist in the 2015 Steampunk Chronicle Awards!

Oh, and if there's ever anything you want and you can't find it in my shop... convo me! I love nothing more than a custom design challenge!

Hopefully I'll get to speak to you soon!

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalised orders

I offer a fully custom and personalised service, for which I request a minimum of a 50% deposit to commence work on an order (a smaller deposit or payment plans are available for long term projects such as for a wedding or christmas gift. The balance and shipping is due on completion, once pictures of the completed item have been seen and approved. If you'd like a no obligation quotation for a custom design, please simply message me.

Sizing details

The sizes for all of my hats should be shown in each listing description, however if you cannot see this information, please simply message me for sizes.

For my full sized hats, I offer small, medium and large standard sizes, but I do prefer to work to actual head measurements if these are available. Please send these with your order. Alternatively, message me after placing your order or I will message you! :)

Care instructions

My hats are made of milliners quality buckram material, so are lightweight yet strong.

They can be very carefully cleaned with a duster or damp cloth, like any other hat, but cannot be washed, not even by hand.

Please don't get your hat excessively wet! Despite my best efforts to make them rain proof, a heavy downpour or lengthy exposure to showers can damage the decorations I use.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All my orders are sent in sturdy packaging to protect them in transit. Most of my hats re sent in double walled boxes for safety and labelled clearly as 'fragile'.

I offer a gift wrap service on request. I can also include a suitable gift card for a small fee, but please message me for more information.

Wholesale availability

I do offer wholesale products, however as my prices are kept to a minimum for my customers, I can only offer a small discount for large bulk orders.

Alternatively, I have found that some retailers purchase a larger number of my products, and increase the price to sell themselves... I have no objection to this. Providing I get the price I want, I don't mind what you do to sell them yourself.

Care instructions

To wear your beautiful hat, there are 3 hidden elastic loops to the underside of the brim, inside the crown. My unique elastic loops give you flexibility to use what suits your hairstyle. I personally like to use a hat elastic, but if you prefer, you can slide a narrow hair band, clips, combs or grips through these loops instead.

To use the hat elastic provided, slide it through the two side loops and tie the ends together. Adjust the length to get a good, firm fit. The elastic is worn behind the head, at a 45 degree angle from your forehead (where the hat will sit) to the back of your head, with the elastic running behind your ears.

If you need any help on how to wear your hat, don't hesitate to contact me!

I'm a Plus Size bride, do you offer larger garters?

Yes! I can make any of my garter designs to fit.
I DON'T CHARGE ANYTHING EXTRA FOR THIS SERVICE.
I don't think it's fair to expect a plus size bride to have to pay extra for their garter.

Custom and personalised orders

Obviously, with all handmade items, every piece that's made is always a teeny weeny bit different... that's why people buy handmade isn't it? To get the feeling of care, uniqueness and originality! I adore making hats and think it's important to ensure every single piece I make is a one-off.

I work to detailed designs for all my items, but sometimes, due to the nature of the materials I use, the occasional trimming, charm or minor detail might be a little different.

Obviously, if there's something in particular you like (or don't like for that matter!), it only takes a quick message to ask me to include (or exclude) an element of a design. Usually I'll do this at no extra cost and it means your purchase is even more exclusive to you!
