From Childhood Interest to a Passionate Hobby in Adulthood

Inspired by the afternoons I spent as a child with my Grandad in his garage learning how to use his tools, I purchased a wood turning lathe in 2013 and have been honing my skills ever since. I am largely self-taught and really enjoy the challenge of mastering new skills and techniques. At weekends I can often be found pottering about in the shed, challenging myself with something new!

I named my shop Orocco Projects after the place where my wife and I got married which has a beautiful and rare Iroko wood bar. My favourite wood to work with is cocobolo as I love how it changes to a beautiful high gloss as you turn and finish it.

I make all the items in the shop in my rather small but very well equipped shed at the bottom of my garden. I have enjoyed working with wood since I was a child and over the years have built bookcases, coffee tables, toy boxes and even a mahogany cradle for my daughter when she was born. I mainly work with wood but sometimes I'll use acrylic for a bit of variety. I like the tones and shades natural wood gives and how the various finishes can make the same wood look completely different.
