How I got here!

I've always been a 'creative type' spending a lot of my childhood marvelling in nature and trying to paint it, covering my bedroom walls with art and finding huge pleasure in the illustrations of my childhood books. Books that particularly enchanted me were Alice in Wonderland and Masquerade by Kit Williams. I completed a Fine Art foundation degree with the view to going on to complete a full degree, but being on my own meant that life seemed to become a little more urgent, with the need to earn I ended up getting a 9-5 job instead. At that point, I still painted for my own enjoyment but became involved in the other aspects of life.

Twenty years later, married with two children and working part-time I felt the need increasingly to be creative. So in 2017 I started to paint again - it was wonderful! the first painting I did was accepted and sold in a local exhibition, which validated that I still 'had it'. I became more positive in my outlook, decided to devote two days a week to painting and entered local exhibitions and started selling my work. This gave me the confidence to enter Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year and to my delight I won my round as one of their wildcards. Just the best day, fabulous fun and was shocked to win.

A few months later, I am now in Norfolk, enjoying the beautiful countryside and seasides and am continuing to paint. Nature in all it's forms has always been so important to me, now I am constantly taking photos and thinking about the next painting. I tend to have a few paintings in progress at any one time, and although always use acrylic paint I like to experiment with ink, pastel, glazes and beeswax. Because the paintings are important to me, often being of places that I love and feel connected to, I have used sand from particular beaches on certain pieces to enhance the physical link......only a little, I promise! I love painting, have realised that if at all possible one should follow what they love doing and that the benefits to health are so important. Enjoy x
