PhileasYarns is taking a short break
Phileas Yarns combines a love for wool and knitting, and a passion for travelling
Phileas Yarns has been named after the famous fictional globetrotter Phileas Fogg (from Jules Verne's Around The World In 80 Days), a name perfectly fitted for a hand-dyed yarn which colourways are inspired by travel and the many sights around the globe.
We work hard to ensure this brand, shop, and related media, are a safe space for all crafters around the world. Regardless of their gender, life and relationship choices, ethnicity, religion, abilities or disabilities, or body shapes and sizes.
If you would like to engage in a conversation, or have any query about anything and everything, I invite you to get in touch.
At Phileas Yarns, we want to give you the best products. When you receive your yarn, you will find a whole load of information in the inside of the ball band. But I know you want to know about your yarn before you buy, that's only fair!
Phileas Yarns uses professional grade acid dyes. No panic, the acid element is white vinegar, nothing too dodgy. After the dye bath, the yarn is rinsed and washed with a soft shampoo. I, Sylvie, hand dye all the yarn in my kitchen at home.
All yarns have been Superwash treated. This treatment means the yarn can sustain a wash in the washing machine. I would still recommend you wash your hand dyed yarn and knitwear by hand or on the hand wash program of your machine where applicable. And also because colours may bleed in hot water.
About the different yarn bases...
EXPLORER is a Merino yarn comes from South America, specifically Argentina and Uruguay. None of the farms, which provide our undyed yarn supplier, practise mulesing (a pretty nasty way to treat the Merino sheep against some fly infestation in the big folds of their backside skin and fleece). Please be assured that those sheep are being well cared for by the farmers, giving you the best of fleeces and yarns.
The Bluefaced Leicester in WANDERLUST, PASSENGER and RAMBLER has been sourced in Britain, through the British Wool Marketing Board, who buys fleeces from small farms all over the U.K to provide our undyed yarn supplier.
PASSENGER contains some bamboo fibre, which is collected from the inner part of the sturdy plant we know, providing a natural alternative to nylon.

Hello! I am Sylvie, and I am the wandering mind and busy hands behind Phileas Yarns. My shop is born out of two passions, travelling and knitting. When I'm not doing either of these two things, I'll be baking, sewing, reading or being with friends.
Please make sure you take a moment you read through the policies and information below. I just want to make sure we are on the same page here; honesty makes good friends...

Additional policies and FAQs
Some colours will bleed when washed. You can use white vinegar to stabilize the colours if you are washing several hand dyed colours at one time.
Photography : I endeavor to photograph the yarns with getting the colours as right as possible. But please be aware that colours rendition do vary from one computer, tablet or phone screen to another. When you get your yarn, it might look slightly different from the picture.
The laws of hand dyed yarns : because of the process of hand dyeing yarns, a skein may be looking slightly different from another (even within a same batch), and a dye lot may be lighter/ darker than the next. It may not look like it when you hold the skeins in your hands, but once knitted up it's all different business... I recommend you alternate your skeins every two or three rows/rounds to ensure a lovely uniformity in the colour and that your garment will look beautiful.
Gauge : I find gauges very subjective. I for one pretty much never gauge as a yarn or pattern recommends, and end up going down a needle size. Please follow the gauge instructions on your chosen pattern and the yarn weight it calls for. Any question, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me; I'm here to help!
Custom orders : if you'd like a jumper or cardigan worth of yarn, please get in touch and I will dye a fresh lot or two for you, depending on how much you require. It will help with colour consistency (see "The laws of hand dyed yarns" above). - THIS IS CURRENTLY A BIT DIFFICULT TO STICK TO FOR ME, BUT WE CAN DISCUSS...
Available with Explorer Sock and Explorer Sport (dye lot = 400g); Wanderlust DK, Wanderlust 4ply, and Passenger (dye lot = 500g).
Allergy : If you are severely allergic to cats, please note that Phileas Yarns HQ is home to a cheeky feline friend who, despite my best effort to keep her away from it, may manage to leave a hair or two on the yarn. She likes to think her job is to run quality surveys of the yarn I dye for you!
Miscellaneous : I am a French native speaker. Having lived in the UK for over 10 years now, I am fully bilingual. Si vous avez quelconques questions a propos de la laine Phileas Yarns, n’hésitez pas! Je vous assisterez du mieux que je peux...
