Creating works of Art in Polymer Clay - PolyOriginals

Hello, and welcome to my shop, PolyOriginals.

My name is Fiona Abel-Smith and I am an internationally renowned, award-winning, Polymer Clay artist. I love creating works of art in many forms, and Polymer Clay allows me to experiment and put into a three-dimensional format, the continual ideas that spiral through my head.

I have been a creative artist all my life, in fact as a child, I was always far more interested in what I could make with the packaging, than what was inside any presents I received! I just loved creating things from scratch, and that passion remains with me today.

When I was introduced to Polymer Clay in 2006, I immediately saw the potential it had for me, and making complex canes is what drew me to it as an artistic medium. I love the idea of creating designs and pictures in a cane, where the same pattern runs through from top to bottom, like some giant and complex form of sea-side rock candy.

I started creating pieces immediately, and was lucky enough to be successful in selling in galleries and shops. I began providing polymer clay workshops in 2007, and still regularly teach, providing workshops and selling tutorials on a wide variety of Polymer Clay techniques. I have PDF tutorials available here, from my Etsy shop, as well as a YouTube channel where I post simple, free video tutorials.

I have been a committee member for both the British Polymer Clay Guild, and the International Polymer Clay Association, and I currently co-run a Polymer Clay group in the UK.

I will quite happily spend many days creating one complicated cane, yet also love more simple ones, where you can Kaleidoscope the patterns to form new and dynamic designs.

From these initial canes I can create animals, flowers, jewellery, sculptures and works of art. But in every piece, the colours are not painted on, or added as a transfer, but are the result of plain coloured clay being blended and manipulated to form colourful patterns and designs.

While I have sold my work elsewhere for many years, having this Etsy shop will now allow me to give everyone not just a wider variety of options to purchase some of my work, but will enable me to show my latest pieces as I create them.

Here, I can list the whole process, from tutorials and raw canes, which you can purchase to create your own polymer pieces, through charmingly simple pieces, right up to complex flower jewellery, and pictures. Which ever piece of art work takes your attention, I am delighted to bring you a selection of my polymer art and tutorials.

Frequently asked questions
Can the raw polymer canes be used to cover pen blanks, and could they be turned on a lathe?

Yes to both question. The Polymer Clay canes, once warmed, as per the instructions they arrive to you with, can be fitted around blank pen barrels. Once baked, according to the Manufacturer's instructions, They can either be sanded and polished, or, if you are an experienced Lathe user, turned on a lathe. Here is a useful video to watch by one of my customers, using the canes for the first time, to turn a pen barrel coated in Polymer Clay and Resin. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBV1n3B_uOc&feature=youtu.be If you have any questions, or would like any advice, please ask me, I am happy to help.

What is Polymer Clay?

Polymer Clay is a man made sculpting medium that remains pliable until it is baked. It can be baked in a normal oven as it cooks at a low temperature. It is one of the few mediums where you can create a complex pattern in a ‘cane’ and reduce this to a very small size while maintaining the integrity of the pattern.

As a beginner will I be able to make anything using the tutorials?

I try to ensure that all my tutorials, unless I express otherwise, are suitable for beginners upwards. I include in one of the PDF Downloads tips and instructions for beginners on the basics of working with Polymer Clay. I hope that these will be sufficient to tell you all you need to know, but suggest that you contact me if you need to know anything else specific to the tutorial you have purchased.

How do you get the pattern in the clay?

I have various tutorials you can view online to show how the pattern gets within the clay. Here are a couple that you may enjoy watching:

What do I do with a cane I bought from you which is unbaked?

There are many used for unbaked canes. Normally, after warming them gently with body heat for a bout 20 minutes, people take thin slices from the cane to lay together to form patterns. I have a video showing you what to do with your canes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPUdhRwzy04&t=5s. If you have any other questions about this, so send me a conversation.
