About

Simple, informal artisan pottery.

I'm a contemporary studio potter making small, tactile porcelain and stoneware vessels alongside my practice as a painter. My work has a natural, earthy aesthetic, an antidote to the look and feel of mass production . The Japanese tradition of wabi-sabi - the inherent beauty found in the aesthetics of imperfection and age - informs the design of my pottery and offers an alternative to the detached precision of factory made ceramics. You connect directly with the earth and the maker's time and hand when you hold a bowl that's been crafted this way.

Treatments using slip (liquid clay) and sgraffito (scratching) give the rich surface I'm looking for, and are undertaken before the clay is bone dry. I bisque fire in an electric kiln, part-glaze, and then re-fire to 1240 or 1260 degrees C.

The bowls are fully glazed on the inside, making them food safe. They are a perfect size for tapas, dipping sauces, yoghurt, sweets, ginger root, garlic..., or simply as accent objects around the home. For hygiene, they are not suitable for drinks as they are only part-glazed externally. Dishwasher safe, but washing by hand would be preferable.

My stoneware bowls areindividually moulded, hand formed and decorated and my porcelain bowls are wheel thrown and often altered. No two are completely identical; the bowl featured in the individual listing is the one for sale.
