The 'creative inspiration' shelf in my studio. The little bit of calm in the chaos of paint, fabric, wood and dust!!
Creating coastal inspired personalised gifts.....here is how it all started.
I think it started with driftwood...a love of driftwood.
I use to make driftwood mirrors and sell at craft markets in Suffolk, where I'm from.
I remember lots of day trips to the coast, Southwold and Aldeburgh....I also remember the yummy fish and chips!
I loved walking along the beach looking for sea glass and pebbles with holes in and always had a bag with me to carry back the driftwood.
But then I moved to London and the driftwood sadly stayed in Suffolk.
Then on to the next adventure...cranberries, dried cranberries in fact.
Buying cranberries in bulk, I'd string them up to air dry, then carefully thread them on to wire to create little cranberry hearts .
I was living in South London at the time and being new to the area I would go off exploring with a rucksack full of cranberry hearts.
I stumbled upon a beautiful French antique shop, the owner admired my cranberry hearts and bought some, she asked "what else do you make" at the time, nothing...but that quickly changed.
Along came moss wreaths, lavender hearts, linseed wreaths all things floral (I use to be a florist back in Suffolk) Then, because of that little cranberry heart I ended up working at the beautiful French antique shop for two years, until one day I decided it was time to go it alone.......scary!!
Working in the antique shop opened my eyes to wonderful designers and the world of retail, I started to make wooden decorative gifts: beach huts, boats, chickens, doves, hearts....the list goes on.
The designs have changed along the way and I concentrate mainly on coastal inspired personalised gifts now. I might not work with driftwood anymore....but at least I get to play around with boats all day! www.rachelpettittdesigns.co.uk
