About

"Things" That speak your mind

Rethinkthings LTD is a product collection designed and produced by me (Ilsa) from my studio in Liverpool UK. For many years it was the focus of conceptual product design, producing inventive and unusual items that either helped people in their day to day lives, or thought creatively about how to better use materials or the space in our homes.

The idea for “Rethinkthings” as a design led product brand offering “alternative tools for living” first came to me at the New Designers graduate show in 2003 when I was fresh from University, attempting to break into the industrial world of creativity. I wanted to create a company that could create interesting products which challenged our perceptions of everyday existence and offered something of value as a result.

The brand started in earnest after many failed attempts in 2009 following my success as winner of BBC2 (Design for Life with Philippe Starck) reality documentary. The publicity I received off the back of this TV appearance meant that I had an incredible opportunity to get my early concepts off the ground and into the hearts and minds of the public. I began with my much acclaimed product “Kaspa” ghost lamp which produced light without energy, and followed this up to create an elegant leverage device called “Flo” to assist people from seated to standing. From this, I was very lucky to receive further opportunities to work as a creative consultant to other brands and individuals.

I continued with similar work for a number of years whilst also lecturing in product design at colleges and Universities. Along the way there have been many products that didn’t quite make it, they were either too conceptual or too expensive to produce for customers. I have always wanted to make creativity accessible and affordable, and I over time I began to realise that continuing to create items that perhaps may have seemed “unrealistic” went against my original philosophy of challenging and transforming the “everyday”.

Through much refinement and experimentation with different processes, and getting feedback from tons of trade shows and my own bricks and mortar shop In Liverpool Bluecoat Chambers (MYNE Boutique). I eventually moved towards graphic and illustration based gift ranges which felt like a more sensible way to create meaning and make a connection with the hearts and minds of many.

I began with the arduous task of untangling everything I had ever created to get to the very essence of what I really wanted to make afresh, that would be seen as valuable and accessible to others. I extracted all of the items that didn’t work and slowly developed ranges for those that did. This is an ongoing process and takes us to where we are today.

I set up the Etsy shop in 2016 following the passing of my mother. The months that followed were tough and a lot of soul searching led me to believe I had made the right choices in changing my design focus both for me and my future. Today I spend my time developing new work by trying to better understand what people care about and how they make connections with others through gifting. The ideas come whilst doing everyday “life stuff”, the best ones are then digitised by me (usually on the sofa at home), prototyped and made by me in my studio, and then sent to you lovely lot!

Rethinkthings has been rethought – A LOT! I hope that you find my items accessible, authentic, funky, memorable and most importantly of some value. I continue striving to reflect what is in peoples hearts and minds, to make gifts meaningful, and home human.
