If At First You Don't Succeed...

Since I was at school, I had dreamed of living a life where I could share my creativity with others. I went through an art education, gaining a BA in Visual Arts, but after graduating, though I still painted and drew, it was hard to keep up with my real love - clay. I was working low paid jobs and could barely afford a roof over my head, leave alone a kiln or a space to put it in.

Over the years I tried a few little business ideas, dipped my toe in the water. One was a weekly market stall at a local arts centre. Another was a handmade cards business. However, although I was selling to friends, family, people at work, when I did the figures for taking it further it just wasn't viable. I was frustrated.

This toe dipping went on for years and I would sign up for ceramic evening classes at the local college just to have access to a kiln. However, with only two hours a week, term time only, I still wasn't getting anywhere. My confidence was waning and I was rapidly losing faith that I would ever be able to use these skills for anything other than my own pleasure.

A few years ago I moved north, to the Peak District with my partner. We found jobs and together were able to rent a house that had more space than either of us had had before. I finally had somewhere to plug in a kiln! You can't imagine how thrilled I was when I realised I could make that dream come true after all those years! I remember the day it arrived. I'd bought it second hand from eBay and had arranged for a delivery firm to pick it up and bring it back. My partner was waiting for it at home as I rushed back from work, and I texted him every 10 minutes on my journey to see whether it was there yet! Finally he said yes it's here! I was so excited I couldn't stop smiling! When I got home I found that not only a kiln had been delivered but that the eBay seller had included a huge pile of kiln furniture, slips, glazes, wooden batts, kiln wash, even some clay. I was so happy and couldn't wait to get started.

After that day I started to make pieces with clay again, but it took a long time to get my confidence back. I also began to pick up other things that I hadn't done for a while such as textiles, jewellery making and so on. My work was steadily piling up and my partner said to me that he thought I should try and sell some of it. I think that was because it was in danger of taking over the house! I wasn't really sure though. I loved making but was still so scared of putting my work out there and nobody liking it. In the end I did it anyway, and I was so glad I did!

Last year I set up two online stores, one on Etsy and one on another marketplace that I have since left. I was somewhere between shocked and ecstatic the first time I made a sale! I was (and continue to be) so warmed by the fact that people connected with what I had made and wanted it to be part of their life. I never forget that gift that my customers give me and it's one of the reasons that customer service is so high on my list of priorities.

This year, with a lot of technical help from my partner (I'm not the most technically minded person!!) I am setting up a website of my own to include not only my arts and crafts, but also my music, poetry, stories and articles. It's a lot of work, but tremendously exciting. Since I first wrote this section I have been able to make this work my only job! An amazing gift! I can feel Rowan Song growing. Most importantly I can feel myself growing. That seed that took so long to germinate and start making it's way towards the sunlight, is finally moving. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Rowan Song!.

Rowan Song Crafts brings you lovingly made, individual crafted pieces made in clay, fabric and a range of other natural & man-made materials. I like to re-use, recycle and up-cycle wherever possible, taking great pleasure in transforming beads, fabrics and other items that might otherwise be consigned to waste. Where I have used these in a piece this is made clear in the listing. Many pieces are inspired by nature, and the natural materials such as clay, shell, gemstone, wood and bone reflect this. Please feel free to browse the shop. You will find a mix of items, from clay oil lamps to jewellery to rune sets. If you see something you like but would like more than one or a customised version then just let me know. I'll be more than happy to help!

All items will be sent out packaged in a way that will protect them as much as possible during transit. For ceramic items the packaging needs to be very sturdy, so this may mean slightly higher packing costs due to the materials and extra weight involved.

We aim to dispatch all items within a maximum of 3 working days from payment being completed. On the rare occasions that we don't manage this, your shipping will be upgraded to 1st class at no extra cost.

Postage to the UK will usually be by Royal Mail 2nd Class Recorded Delivery for orders over £20 and Royal Mail 2nd class delivery for all orders under £20. Sometimes we may use a courier service if it is more cost effective. All orders will be posted to the address that you have provided.

Please get in touch before purchasing if you would like a faster postal service such as Royal Mail's Special Delivery. I can then add the additional postal cost to the listing to be paid for in the usual way.

Postage to all other destinations will be by Royal Mail Airmail for items under £20. Larger, more expensive items will be sent by Royal Mail's tracked international airmail services. Please see the listings for cost. If there is no price listed for your country then please contact me and I will be happy to provide you with a quote.

***Please note that it can be very difficult sometimes to estimate combined postage rates. If you are ordering several items then I will check and reimburse you if there is a significant difference between what you have paid and the actual cost of packing and shipping. You can also ask for a check on the total shipping fee prior to purchase if you prefer.***

As the buyer, you will be responsible for paying any customs or import taxes or duties applicable in your own country.

If you have any questions about shipping or postal services and fees then please don't hesitate to contact us.
Additional policies and FAQs
Commissions and custom work can be undertaken. Terms and conditions such as deadlines will be discussed and agreed with you before confirming your order. Ceramic pieces can take some time to get through their 2 or sometimes 3 firings, so please allow a couple of months, especially if you are asking for a complex piece or have a specific deadline. My usual turnaround is 4-6 weeks.

I never want to let my customers down, so will always be honest with you about whether your desired time-frame is achievable rather than give you an unrealistic expectation.

Prior to starting work I will create a custom listing for you that you can add to your basket and pay for in the normal way. For more expensive items, payments may be split into two listings so that you pay for the item in advance and the shipping upon completion. Payment by instalments may be possible for some projects, but this is on a discretionary basis.

Once your payment has cleared I will then start making your item. For more complex pieces I will convo you with a photo at key stages to make sure the work is on track as you envisioned it, and to allow you to have input to the creative process as it develops.

Please see information in the Refunds Policy section to be clear about your right to cancel with regard to custom pieces.

***PLEASE NOTE: Non-UK buyers please note that all transactions made through this Etsy store including purchase of all listings and custom orders shall be governed by and construed in accordance with UK law. The courts of the UK will have exclusive jurisdiction to adjudicate any dispute arising under or in connection with any transactions***
