About

Remembering a forgotten age of class

Rutherford & Fairfax stands for traditional goldsmithing of high standards, inspired by the golden age of quality and craftsmanship. An age when manners made a man and being earnest was important. A time of handkerchieves and pocket watches, monacles and monograms. A time of handwritten letters, dressing for dinner, silver cutlery, writing desks, pen and ink, gin and tonic, willow and leather. In short a forgotten age of class.

Rutherford and Fairfax are Michael and Rose. A German goldsmith and an English jeweller who met at a jewellery exhibition in 2007.
They united their handmaking skills and set up a workshop in Berlin. Rutherford and Fairfax was born.

Our workshop looks like a tool and machine museum.
We collect old tools and machines, everything that is old and well made. Some mills and other tools are almost 100 years old and still work like in ancient times. If you visit Berlin and want to see our studio, give us a call.

We use traditional techniques. We forge, solder, weld. We also make molds of intricate master models and cast them in a variety of methods like lost wax casting and the antique sand casting, We have a vast number of amazing jewelry manuals from as early as 1824 – a constant form of inspiration and enlightenment.

Our speciality is nature weddings rings that are made by molding twigs, tree bark, shale and other found materials and forge them into rings. Always fascinated by the natural world, in the spirit of the best Victorian botanists, it was the unexpected irregularity and beautiful patterns that drew us towards this unique wedding ring approach.

We recycle our own metals using scrap gold and silver to re-alloy and cast your jewelry. When we buy metals, they are exclusively recycled.
Our gemstones are all from small gem cutting companies who buy their rough locally and sell their stones at gem fairs in Germany. This guarantees the provenience and controllable ethical standards.
E.g., our diamonds are from South Africa and India. Our sapphires, rubies and spinels are from Sri Lanka. Tourmalines and quartz from Brazil.
We also buy old stock of diamonds, extracted from old jewelry, antique cuts etc. which guarantees a sound background. If you are interested in details, please contact us.
