I am a textile and waterclour artist.
When both my children got married in 2015, I produced bridal and bridesmaids’ accessories for the weddings - and have continued making similar accessories ever since.
I make flowers by layering organza with taffeta, offcuts of fabric and threads, and Angelina hot-melt fibres to produce an iridescent fabric, which is then outlined in free machine embroidery, cut to shape with a hot knife, and embellished with more machine embroidery and beads. I mount the resulting flowers, leaves and butterflies on hair clips and corsages, and also on wedding crowns and bouquets, creating a long-lasting memento of that special day.
I weave wraps on a basic scarf loom, using fine mohair/silk yarns (which are difficult to weave on more complicated looms), and make flowers to complement the wraps.
I also make machine-embroidered and woven hangings and pictures. These are displayed on my personal website www.sarahcage.co.uk, and a few are included in the Etsy shop on a rotating basis. More recent work is posted on my Facebook page Textile Designs by Sarah Cage. Any of the pictures that are still available could be added to the Etsy shop as custom orders.
During the Covid lockdown I added cards to my shop - OOAK machine embroidered cards and batches of 5 printed cards taken from my watercolour sketches. Contact me to find out what cards I have in stock at the moment.
As well as my Etsy shop, I exhibit with the Midlands Textile Forum, and sell items from the shop along with prints of my watercolour sketches on note cards and postcards, hand dyed yarns and machine embroidered cards and jewellery, at craft fairs and shops in the South Birmingham area. My work has regularly been selected for Royal Birmingham Society of Artists' Open and Prize exhibitions, and I exhibit with Hall Green Art Society.
I am happy to take custom orders – the turn-around time for single bespoke items is 1-2 weeks, whereas a bespoke collection would take 1-2 months
