A selection of glass rods that I work from
I'm Scarlet and I'm a lampwork glass artist. I create from rods of coloured glass by melting it in the flame then I squash, pull or roll the semi molten glass into different shapes to make my work.
I live in rural Lincolnshire in a small village with my husband and two children. I love that I have great friends here and that I'm actively part of village life and our local Scout troop. It's quiet and surrounded by farmland, the perfect place to bring up my children.
We also have a great Etsy team here EtsyLincs which I am a team leader for.
I had been lampworking as a hobby for about 6 years. I did set up as a sole trader so I could sell a few pieces but I never really made it a "business" until 2016.
For those of you interested in the science, borosilicate glass is the type of glass that is used in scientific applications, it is also the same type as the original Pyrex glass kitchen wear. Borosilicate glass colours are also more saturated making it more suitable for my style of work that involves using small amounts of colour within a clear lens.
Soda lime glass is perhaps the most prevalent glass, used in fusing, furnace blown glass and for common items such as wine bottles and jam jars.
All glass is fully kiln annealed to ensure the durable qualities of the glass so you can wear or display your glass every day with the same pride and excitement as when it arrived.
Gilson opals are the only opals that can be used inside glass the ones I use come from industry leader profound glass.
The opals have play-of-colour which is an optical effect resulting in flashes of coloured light. This makes them especially beautiful when worn in the sunlight or under various different lights.
Historically opals are considered to bring good luck they are also Octobers birthstone.
Dichroic glass is made with micro layers of metals or oxides (gold, silver, titanium, chromium) between layers of glass. The result is a glass that the colours shift inside as the viewing angle differs. The different metals and oxides produces different colours and tones.
