About

Fantastical pencil crayon illustrations by Shelli Graham

I'm am a Birmingham based freelance illustrator creating intricate, hand drawn illustrations using predominately pencil crayon, water colour and ink.

I graduated in 2008 from the Birmingham School of Art with a degree in Fine Art and the PKF Top Design Award for my final show. Since graduating, my work has been awarded the Premium Art Brands Award for Young Artists for my piece: Yuwaraj the Transmutant King. This illustration was on display at the 152nd Society of Women Artists exhibition, Summer 2013, at the Mall Galleries in London.

My work takes inspiration from literature, in particular fairy tales and nature books, mythology, legends and folk lore - I am an enthusiast of all things fantastical.

Each piece I create starts life as a simple line drawing, which then gets transferred onto stretched, water colour paper. The image is then either worked into with a 2H pencil or inked using a 0.05 fine liner. I use colouring pencils, water colour and ink to finish each illustration off. I occasionally use a little white acrylic for highlights or white fur.

I illustrate children's books on a freelance basis for a number of publishers. Alongside this I also create work to add to my ever-growing range of greeting cards and prints. Please visit my website to view my portfolio of both personal and commissioned work:
