Wedding Handkerchief Tradition

My oldest son married his beautiful wife in 2012. As the groom's mother I was in search of something that I could make to commemorate this special day. I made several handkerchiefs with their names and the wedding date to wipe our happy tears away. I have now made thousands of handkerchiefs for many other weddings. I have had brides customize handkerchiefs that have brought tears to my eyes with their sweet endearments to their parents.

The wedding hanky tradition is said to have begun in the South. Often the wedding handkerchief was passed down through many generations. Today the wedding handkerchief may be given many years prior to even being engaged. A flower girl may receive a handkerchief with a beautiful poem. A child may receive one the day of their Baptism.

Early farmers thought that a bride's wedding day tears brought luck and her tears would bring rain to their crops. Later, it was thought that a bride who cried on her wedding day would never shed another tear about her marriage. Today, wedding handkerchiefs are seen as a practical accessory to blot the bride's happy tears and are tucked away as a remembrance of their wedding day.

I love creating these ageless gifts and always love when a bride brings an idea for a new design.

Care instructions

Wash in cold water and lay flat to air dry. You will need to iron from the back of the handkerchief to avoid melting the thread. I use polyester thread, which gives is a rich shine to it.

Gift wrapping and packaging

I wrap all of my orders in white tissue paper. I will be happy to include a wedding card with any order being mailed directly to the recipient.

I have worked to show as many of the thread colors available as possible. If you do not see the thread color you are looking for, please don't hesitate to message me.

Can the wording me changed?

Yes, of course. Please message me first. I will be happy to change the wording. I can not guarantee that I will be able to add additional words.
